Curly Hair Style Star: Thandie Newton

Introduction

Thandie (Tan-dee) Newton has been on the acting scene since 1991 when she first appeared in the film "Flirting". She had the great fortune of acting with Tom Cruise in 1994's famous Interview With The Vampire along with Kristen Dunst.

The beautiful Scorpion actress (born November 6, 1972 in Zambia, Africa) had her breakthrough role as jewel thief Nyah Hall in Mission Impossible 2 in 2000 again starring her friend Tom Cruise. The British raised star also garnered attention with her roles in Jefferson in Paris with Nick Nolte and Beloved with Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover.

Until her recent award winning performance in Crash, Thandie has been most recognizable to TV's ER fans as Dr. Carter's beautiful Congolese girlfriend Kem (Dr. Makemba 'Kem' Likasu) whom he met in Africa while doing volunteer doctoring. Sadly Thandie's role was limited and served to help escort Dr. Carter permanently from the series.

At the end of the 2004-2005 ER Season the good doctor announced that he was permanently relocating to African soil for a romantically happy ending.

The gifted actress appeared in The Chronicles of Riddick as well as the controversial Crash, which dealt with issues of racism. She is currently working with Will Smith in "The Pursuit of Happyness".

Natural Curls

Besides being known for her acting chops, Thandie is famous for her naturally curly hair which she wears in an array of stunning styles that show off her breathtakingly beautiful face, skin tone and eyes.

Depending on the character she is portraying or the Red Carpet event she is attending, the talented star alternates between wearing her curls au natural or straight. She often pulls her luscious locks up into whimsical and playful twists and pony tails.

Her breathtaking exotic beauty has roots in her mixed British/African background. Her British father married an actual Zambian princess who was known for her spectacular beauty.

Steal Thandie's Twisted Style

One of the secrets to Thandie's healthy hair is the fact that she keeps her natural curls well moisturized. Whether she is wearing her strands curly or straightened, she prefers off-the-face styles.

Hair twists and updos are very popular due to a return to more ladylike, prim and proper fashions. Thandie's chic updo is designed around a sleek sweep of hair gathered into a pony that rests at the back of the crown.

Her natural curls are allowed to billow out over the top of the base. Carefully tousled, the ends are loosely secured against the back of the scalp to form a soft curly bun.

To steal Thandie's updo completely the following steps:

Step 1: Shampoo and condition your hair with your normal products designed for your current hair type, texture and condition.

Shampoo & Conditioner to try for naturally curly strands: PhytoSpecific Vital Force Shampoo and PhytoSpecific - Vital Force Creme Bath

Step 2: Gently towel blot your hair with a thick towel designed to help absorb moisture. Avoid rubbing hair vigorously to avoid frizz. Continue to gently blot hair until all excess moisture is removed.

Step 3: Mix a cocktail of leave-in conditioner and frizz buster in the palms of your hands. Apply to damp strands to help keep hair soft and frizz free.

Frizz Fighters to try for naturally curly strands: Phytodefrisant - Relaxing Baum - 3.3 fl oz (100ml) and John Frieda - Frizz Ease - Original Formula Hair Serum Dropper

Step 4: Apply a tennis ball size of mousse to the palms of your hands. Distribute well through damps strands in order to provide just the right balance of moisture and sheen.

Step 5: Use a wide toothed comb to detangle gently and make sure that the applied styling products are well distributed.

Note: Avoid using gels or similar styling products which will make hair stick and tacky. For a softer, more natural curl, stick with mousse or very light cream.

Step 6: Use a long finger diffuser attachment with your blow dryer. Use the diffuser's long fingers to lift sections of hair and allow them to rest in the bowl of the diffuser as you dry the selected sections.

Step 7: Work in small sections around the entire perimeter of your head until all of the curls have been diffused dry.

Step 8: When hair is 100%, use fingers or hair pick to separate and refine curls. Step 9: For more definition apply a tiny bit of hair wax to the palms of the hands. Soften the wax and then using fingers, lightly apply to curls to add definition.

Note: If desired, use a curling iron to spot curl random sections.

Step 10: Using fingers, direct hair back from the face and pull into a tight ponytail secured by a "hair friendly" Blax, Bungee or other elastic in the same color as your strands. The base of the pony should rest at the back of the crown.

Step 11: Use fingers to gently tousle and fan the curls cascading from the newly formed ponytail into the shape of a soft chignon bun.

Step 12: Select random pieces and pin the curled ends under so that the bobby pin rests against the scalp and helps to hold the bun's desired shape.

Step 13: Apply a shine serum and carefully brush over the top of the bun.

Step 14: Spray well with soft hold hairspray.

Step 15: Attach an elegant hair flower, jeweled barrette or other chic hair accessory to complete the look.

Summary

Thandie loves to wear her natural curls in a variety of updos. She also is flexible and has been known to wear her natural curls in soft waves, stick straight panels of shimmering hair or in a variety of ponies and twists created from blown-out strands. Follow her lead and experiment with a wide range of styles that show off beautiful curls.

Daily Hair Tip
A perfect hair knot is one of the simplest ideas to jazz up the back of any hair. The most important part of having a hair knot is that it look immaculate and be pinned securely. If your hair is too short to form a hair knot you can clip on a fake ponytail and twist it into the knot of your choice.
