Introduction Those of us who love and need (ok, ok, are HOOKED on) hair spray and gel every day, here’s a new line for you: VAIN. I tried the Big Hair Hold (Versatile Styling or Finishing Spray). And always a sucker for catchy names, I loved this name. The Big Hair Hold spray truly is versatile, and can be used either to style or simply finish your ‘do. It makes the hair pliable and easy to work with, but doesn’t cause those annoying flakes you often get with other sprays. You can use it on wet or dry hair, and it also contains a sunscreen to protect your precious hair from punishing UV rays! How I Tested VAIN Big Hair HoldLet me create the scenario for you—I had to beat the rest of my town in to my service station for an oil change at 7am on a Saturday morning, after which I planned to spend a fun few hours at work. So I needed the maximum look in the minimum amount of time. I didn’t even take the time to shampoo my hair, just jumped in and out of the shower. I scooped out about a nickel-sized glob of Dirty Boy, Dirty Girl Hair Goo out, and worked it into my towel-dried hair. So far, so good. Now for the spray. I am very picky about hair spray, and don’t give a hoot about sprays that wimp out and don’t hold. Equally contemptible are those sprays that leave that horrible sticky film on your hair. However, I have to say that the VAIN spray did not disappoint; it held my spikes well, didn’t dull the shine, and it held up admirably all day. Even when my hair dried, it stayed soft and shiny, and kept a good hold. Spray IngredientsSD alcohol (grain based), hydrofluorocarbon152A, isobutene, butyl ester of PVM/MA copolymer, propane, panthenol (Pro Vitamin B5), octyl methoxycinnamate, glycerine (vegetable-based), dimethyl stearamine, octylacrylamide/acrylates/butylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer (wood pulp), PEG-75 lanolin, aminomethyl propanol (organic neutralizing agent), lactamide MEA (sugar beets), linoleamidopropyl ethyldimonium ethosulfate dimethyl lauramine isostearate, fragrance (naturally derived essential oils). NOTE: Use caution—do not expose to temperature exceeding 120 degrees. Contents are under pressure. Do not puncture or incinerate. Do not use near fire or flame. FragranceThe spray fragrance is a little like inhaling helium—kind of chemical-y but not unpleasant. Fortunately, it dissipates on the hair. PackagingThe VAIN spray comes in a matte white metal can with black top and lettering, with VAIN’s standard red and black logo. Conclusion This is the first time I’ve used VAIN products, and I was favorably impressed. The spray does all that it promises, plus it has great sunscreens in the ingredients. Since I regularly fry my hair in the relentless Dallas summers, a good sunscreen in hair products isn’t just a convenience but a necessity. Jane’s RatingOn my own scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, I give VAIN Big Hair Hold and Dirty Boy a 9.5. |
