Katarina Hakansson Celebrity Makeup Artist

Katarina Hakansson - Celebrity Makeup Artist

Some say that in a matter of moments, one's entire life can be completely altered. Katarina Håkansson's life story proves this truism.

For, it was while studying law in Stockholm that Katarina decided to take a sabbatical in Paris, where she went to learn French.

Little could she know that a case of mistaken identity (Katarina was mistaken for a makeup artist) at a cocktail party, would lead to an illustrious makeup artistry career spanning continents, as well as, her own brand.

This was the first mistaken identity that would prove to be definitive for Katarina.

For, with the serendipitous introduction to the world of beauty, Katarina also found herself with a carte blanche pass to Paris' glamorous fashion world. Katarina promptly traded law school and Stockholm for makeup school and Paris.

Yet another twist of fate propelled Katarina decidedly into the world of makeup and fashion. When an artist was a no show at a photo shoot, Katarina was on hand to volunteer her services. Upon arriving on location, she discovered her first professional makeup job was to be with French Elle and Italian photographer Toscani.

After such a high profile opportunity, it took a New York minute before Katarina was working for the most prestigious fashion and beauty publications, including Vogue, Glamour, and Marie Claire; and runway shows such as Christian Dior and Issey Miyake. She also became a favorite of photographers such as Walter Chin and Mikael Jansson.

After many successful years spent working in Paris, Katarina made the decision to work exclusively with Mikael Jansson. Katarina's decision took her back to Sweden, where she would spend the next five years working closely with Jansson and traveling the globe, to such exotic places as Kenya, Morocco, and Tanzania.

It was while with Jansson that Katarina's skills and signature work became recognizable the world over. However, the intensive travel had taken its toll and Katarina made the decision to pack up again and move, this time to New York City. In short order, Katarina's fresh, clean signature artistry style was embraced by none other than Herb Ritts and Peter Lindbergh.

In 1999, after numerous years spent developing her own notably healthy, glowing makeup application style, the philosophy for her skincare and cosmetic concept began taking shape: fresh, youthful looking and feeling skin has to start with the same complexion, whether with makeup or without. The idea for Hakansson skincare was born.

Working with a chemist for five years, Katarina came up with pure, no-nonsense formulas that would recreate the Katarina Håkansson signature look - healthy skin. Teaming up with fashion designer Richard Bengtsson, a fellow Swede living in New York City, they came up with the clean, functional, minimalist packaging that would capture Katarina's aesthetic.

In 2004 Håkansson was launched as five products that combine Scandinavian purity of form with simplicity of function.

Katarina divides her time between New York's West Village and Stockholm, dedicating her time to product development, artistry and building Hakansson worldwide.

Daily Hair Tip
Split ends are a separation of the hair shaft that exposes hair's fragile inner layers. The only real cure for split ends is to have them trimmed.
