Author Gary McKechnie has written a book for National Geographic titled 'USA 101: A Guide to America's Iconic Places, Events and Festivals'.
In a recent interview with Larry Olmsted for USA Today he shared some of his own favorite Top Ten Places where you can visit and find true Americans with traditional attitudes.
(Miss America Candidates for 2010 - Miss America Organization - All Rights Reserved).
One of Larry's favorites in his Top Ten list was the Miss America Pageant. I was thrilled to see Larry's inclusion of Miss America in the list because if you follow this blog, you know that I am a big fan of the pageant and the Miss America Organization.
I report on the happenings of the Miss America winners and contestants on a very regular basis.
Why? Because to me it does define true American happenings. The young women who participate not only focus on beauty and poise but they concentrate on education, scholarship and giving back to their communities.
I have been very impressed over the last several months following the travels of the current 2009 Miss America. She is just as likely to show up at a rally to support the young men and women of the armed forces as she is to visit elder citizens or those in need of other types of support.
I have yet to see her embroiled in a single scandal that other beauty contestant winners might be involved in. Why? She's too busy doing good works in the name of her crown.
As far as the Pageant being one of the ten best places to find true Americans, I would also agree.
What did Gary McKechnie say about the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas held every year? Check it out below:
Miss America Pageant - Las Vegas
Beauty contests are an American staple, but this is the Super Bowl. McKechnie says the event has enjoyed a renaissance of popularity since moving from Atlantic City six years ago.
There are three days of preliminaries before the finals in the pageant (the next one is Jan. 26-30), and tickets are sold for each round. "One night they do talent, one night evening gowns and so on, so it is pretty easy to buy tickets.
Whatever they choose to do for the talent show they do very well, so the quality of the performance is as good as any show on the Vegas Strip." Tickets go on sale in December. 609-653-8700, missamerica.org.
