Although HairBoutique.com is an Internet publisher and focused on hair, hairstyles, beauty, fashion and related topics, I do pay close attention to what is happening in the rest of the media world for a number of reasons.
Therefore I was surprised to learn that at the end of December 2009 the Washington Post is closing its bureaus in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. This has been touted as the biggest write-off of on-the-scene domestic news coverage by any major paper yet.
The Washington City Paper broke the story about the Washington Post, and published the full internal memo on the bureau closures.
According to the inside memos circulating about the Washington Post: "At a time of limited resources and increased competitive pressure, it's necessary to concentrate our journalistic firepower on our central mission of covering Washington and the news, trends and ideas that shape both the region and the country's politics, policies and government."
Many experts have expressed the opinion that this appears to be a sudden move by the prestigious newspaper.
