The fashion and celebrity world were in shock along with his family who were said, by his brother Michael, to be struggling with coming to terms with the sudden death.  McQueen's mother Joyce died a week before the designer and was thought to be a trigger for his sudden demise.

Alexander was found hanged in his Hyde Park home.   Not only did McQueen design stunning and outrageous clothes, he produced some of the most exuberant and creative fashions shows.

McQueen wrote on his Twitter site about how he had had a "------- awful" week following her death."

Speaking just hours after McQueen's death, brother Michael said: "It is just so raw. We are grieving. Everyone is too upset to say anything."

A source said Ronald, McQueen's father had been left "very emotional".

"They spent the night wondering whether to postpone Joyce's funeral. It has been an incredibly difficult decision for them," the source said.

McQueen's death also comes as he revealed had begun dating a porn star who he met on the internet in the months before his death.

In one of his final interviews in September McQueen said his relationship with the man, who he identified only as "Mr Stag", was going well.

His death may also prompt Gucci, the group behind the Alexander McQueen brand, to close the label. Analysts speculated that without the designer who founded it, the label would not be profitable enough to survive. Gucci has refused to comment on the future of the label.

Alexander McQueen will be missed by his many fans around the world.
