I'm always willing to share my favorite at-home hair care solutions to try for shiny, fatter and brass free strands.

Why?  Because I'm always willing to give DIY hair and beauty treatments a trial just to see if they really work.

Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised by the results. Other times I'm left with a gooey mess.  With that vague warning I'm going to share some at-home hair tips I've tried which work, for me.

Not all of my tips will work for all of you reading this blog so buyer beware.  When in doubt proceed with caution.

Honey Hair Shine Treatment

If you've been reading my blog or my articles on HairBoutique.com since 1997 you probably know I'm a huge fan of honey for a wide range of treatments.

My friend Dr. Howard Rosenthal told me about honey for my skin back in 1979 in St. Louis.  I have used honey since that point as a face mask.

I also love it for my hair because it is a natural humectant which attracts moisture and leaves my hair silky and shiny.

Unfortunately, honey is very sticky, and can leave a mess.  Don't use this honey hair treatment if you have pets who can get covered with honey or if your house is prone to ants.

Sweet Shiny Hair Treatment Instructions

Stir 1 teaspoon of softened organic honey into four cups of water which has been warmed on the stove.  Never use water which is hot enough to burn your fingers or scalp.

Slowly pour the honey mixture over freshly washed and rinsed damp hair as the last step in your cleansing/shampoo routine.

A good plan is to cleanse, rinse well, apply desired rinse out conditioner and do your final cool water rinse before applying the honey as the last step.

Do not rinse your hair after you have applied the honey.  Since honey is acidic, it helps the hair's cuticle lay flat and reflect light.

Custom Application Of The Honey Mix

I apply the honey mixture only to my strands from the earlobes to the ends because that's where my hair is most dry and in need of shine and moisture.

You may want to experiment with pouring the honey mix from the roots down to the ends. Since everyone's hair is different and has unique requirements this treatment should be customized to your hair's special needs.

If this is your first try with honey, apply it as a test on a day when you're not going to work or school.

That way, if you don't like the results, you can rinse it right out.

Tone Down Brassy Highlights

This is another favorite at-home hair treatment I've used for years.

When my blonde strands are looking brassy or coppery due to overexposure of the sun or too much hot water I drench my hair with heavy cream or whole milk and allow it to remain on my hair for 10 minutes or longer.

The heavy cream or whole milk is applied right after you have shampooed your tresses and rinsed out the poo.

The natural acids found in dairy products will usually help neutralize unnatural colors in brassy highlights.

Milk It For All It's Worth

Of course this tends to work best for blondes, but some lighter based brunettes have reported good results for their brassy highlights.

After allowing the cream or milk to soak onto wet strands, rinse well and finish with your favorite rinse-out conditioners and a last rinse of cool/cold water.  Style as usual.

Give Your Hair A Beer To Add Volume

After you shampoo, condition and do your final cool/cold water rinse towel blot your strands to remove excess moisture.

Saturate a clean cotton ball with any kind of beer.  Dab the beer infused cotton ball directly onto your roots right before you blow dry.

The beer helps, in many cases, to expand the hair shaft and make hair appear fuller.

Some people swear that beers which contain the most yeast expand the hair the most.

That makes sense to me.  Of course, I can't vouch for that, but when I've tried this treatment I've used regular beer rather than the light versions.

Again, you might like to experiment to see what type of results you achieve.

Daily Hair Tip
If you lie on your back while you sleep this could cause hair stress leading to split ends in the back. To avoid hair stress tie hair back using a soft scrunchie band.
