American Idol (AI) has returned for Season 10 with lots of changes including two new judges and a completely new format.
The debut of Season 10 was last Wednesday, January 19th. Curly haired Devyn Rush of Solebury, Pennsylvania, made a big splash with her voice and her cascade of ringlet infused tresses.
The 20 year old impressed the AI judges enough to make it to Hollywood for the next round. Rush wowed the judges over with her rendition of Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child."
"That was the dessert to the lunch,"Judge Steven Tyler told Rush. "You have a really, really good voice," said Judge Randy Jackson. He said "you have just the right amount of sauce in there. It's a singing competition first, and that girl can blow."
Rush is being touted as another Justin Guarini, the second runner up of the first season's American Idol. Guarini and Rush not only share masses of gorgeous curls, they also are from Bucks County.
Rush's audition was taped in the late summer on New York City's Chelsea Pier. She was also featured in an extended segment that featured her job as a singing waitress at a New York diner.
Even though the AI judges praised her voice, they were not complimentary about her image. Tyler and Lopez told Philadelphia born Rush she needed to improve her image. Judge Tyler said "someone's got to take her clothes shopping."
Rush has been performing since the early age of 6 months. She has been doing commercials and print advertising. She developed a passion for singing and was invited to appear on PAX TV's "America's Most Talented Kids," where she performed LeAnn Rimes' "Can't Fight the Moonlight" from the "Coyote Ugly" movie soundtrack.
Rush is a New Hope-Solebury High School graduate and was a featured singer on "Embraceable You," a three-part documentary project on the diversity and tolerance which distinguishes the borough of New Hope.
Multi-talented as a dancer and musician, Rush can play guitar, bass, piano and drums. She lists her favorite artists as Aretha Franklin and Christina Aguilera.
The singer says she lives with her mother, father and older sister. According to her website, she will "continue to pursue her dream of stardom with the love and support of her family and friends."
