Rise Of Hector Hair For Men

Rise Of Hector Hair For Men

The Hour is a 2011 BBC six-part television drama series set on a British topical news program in 1956 during the Suez Crisis.  The show, likened to AMC's Mad Men in some respects, stars Ben Whishaw (Freddie Lyon), Dominic West (Hector Madden) and Romola Garai (Bel Rowley).

This well-done series has a strong tie-in with the hair and fashions of the 1950s.  Hector Madden does an amazing job as the brand new reader of the TV news program.    His hair, which is notable for its suave styling, will be henceforth known as Hector Hair.

Hector Hair is iconic and defined as sleek Hollywood leading man hair.  The Hector Hair hairstyle combines a sharp side-parting with a perfectly slicked-back off-the-hairline front.  The sides are precision sculpted.

Besides having movie star hair, Hector is a debonair dresser who wears wide lapels, pinstripes and the perfectly placed tie-pin on the perfect tie.   Hector also accessorizes with the appropriate hats which were the height of fashion in the 1950s.

Whereas Hector Madden has that suave TV personality look down pat, his style is directly contrasted by that of Freddie Lyon.  In fact, Hector and Freddie, are the key characters in the show's male fashion story.

While Hector has picture perfect hair and fashions, Freddie has a thick disheveled mop of wavy hair.  Freddie's hair is waxed and combines a floppy fringe on one side and a casually pushed back side.  It looks somewhat like it has exploded.  Freddie combines his wild hair with sleeveless cardigans and salt-and-pepper wool suits with pleat-front slacks.

The show's creators have done a great job of providing instant visual differences between the buttoned down Hector Madden with his Hector Hair and the loosened shirt buttoned Freddie Lyon with his rebel vibe.  Freddie is obviously the free-thinking young rebel of the piece.  The two are rivals for the same job at the news channel with Freddie being the eager young reporter gunning for top position.

Hector Hair borrows a definite dash of retro posh boy which could be taken directly from one of the ad execs from Mad Men.  On the other hand, Freddie has a more nerdy look.  Of the two, Hecto Hair has it over Freddie's hair in desirability as portrayed in the show.

Once Freddie has become integrated into the news station as a young reporter he expresses his excitement by becoming progressively more disheveled in his fashions and his hair which gets more messy by the minute.

The marvelous show premiered on BBC Two and BBC HD on 19 July 2011.  Each episode lasts 60 minutes, with Ruth Kenley-Letts as producer and Coky Giedroyc as lead director.

It was commissioned by Janice Hadlow, Controller, BBC Two, and Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning and produced by Kudos Film and Television.
