Dewy skin, clear complexion and a flawless tan are things that we want to preserve all year round. Unfortunately they wither away in the fall when sunny vacations are over and it’s back to the grind.
Dr. David E. Bank, founder and director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, NY and President of the New York State Society for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery shares his expert tips on how to extend that beautiful summer vacation glow from fall deep into winter.
Dr. Bank's tips include the following:
Remove Dead Skin Cells - The sand at the beach and regular shaving during the summer acts as a natural exfoliation for the body.
Professional Treatment - Requiring no anesthetic, microdermabrasion uses light abrasion to remove dead skin cells on the epidermis thereby revealing younger, smoother skin.
At Home - To preserve smooth and dewy skin, opt for an at-home gentle exfoliation with salicylic acid twice a week to slough off dead skin.
Prevent Sudden Acne Breakout - The sun acts as drying agent and a tan helps camouflage pimples. However, too much sun can potentially backfire as ultraviolet lights stimulate sebaceous glands, which causes the skin to thicken up.
In-Office Treatment - Glycolic acid peels and fruit acid peels keep pores from being blocked up and help treat pimples that have already formed. At Home - A daily cleanser with salicylic acid can help to remove excess skin cells and is a great anti-acne treatment.
Reduce Stress And Wrinkles - Your summer glow is partially attributed to a relaxed state of mind. Stress causes wrinkles as people are more likely to make cringing facial expressions during this emotional state.
In-Office Treatment - To simultaneously treat acne and wrinkles, consider Botox which is clinically proven to prevent acne by minimizing oil production of the sebaceous glands.
At home: In addition to finding ways to help reduce stress like regular exercise, also opt for an anti-aging treatment that contains retinol or vitamin C.Zap Dak Spots - Over exposure to sun in the summer can cause sun spots in the fall.
In-Office Treatment - Consider a few sessions of fractional laser treatment to help breakup pigment from deep under the skin.
At home: Products with soy and vitamin C can help even out your complexion and also neutralize free radical damage caused by the sun.Extending Your Tan - Moderate tanning with sunscreen will give that glowing tan worthy of envy.
At Home - Look for a tan extending product or gradual self-tanner. The main ingredient in these products is DHA, which is derived from sugar cane and binds with the amino acids in the superficial layer of the skin, thus preserving the tan.
