Natural Hair Styles New Patron Saint

At a recent natural hair styles show in Atlanta, U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin discussed the reluctance of African American women to exercise in part due to their desire to preserve their carefully created hairstyles.  Benjamin is promoting exercise and proper nutrition in order to achieve optimal health.

Many women of color who have chemically treated hair have reported that they don’t like to sweat unnecessarily because the moisture will undo the chemicals in the relaxer, ruining the effect.

It's true.  Sweating really does a number on chemically straightened hair.  Your style will completely disappear and you have to redo your hair from scratch.  In addition, many black women have hair that’s too brittle to wash every day, which can also dissuade some from sweaty workouts.

Which is why natural hair styles provide a win/win for women who truly want to work out.  Natural hair provides an easy-to-care-for option which actually solves these previous issues.

Although Benjamin was pushing for women to start working out and eating healthier, she accidentally gave out a shout out for the benefits of going with a natural hair style which is free of chemicals, relaxers or similar, which can be ruined by excessive sweating during exercise.  Some natural hair style experts are calling Benjamin the new patron saint of wearing hair naturally.  Obviously with good reason.
