Frank believes “hair color played an important role in portraying Kara Hayward's" character, Suzy, for Moonrise Kingdom.  The movie director wanted Barbosa to create naturally-occurring summer sunny hair for Suzy that was rich with warm tones and golden highlights

In order to achieve the natural appearance of sun kissed hair, Barbosa first dyed the lead actress’ hair two shades lower using IT&LY HAIRFASHION’S Aquarly Light Gold Blonde.  He used 20 volume developer at the roots and the higher lift 30 volume from the mid-shaft to ends.

Barbosa further lightened the ends by painting on Easily Blonde highlights.  This created the appearance of hair which had been “naturally weathered by the sun.”

IT&LY Delyton Demi-permanent Hair Coloring System

During filming of Moonrise Kingdom, Frank maintained Hayward’s hair with IT&LY Delyton demi-permanent hair coloring system.

After wrapping Moonrise Kingdom, celebrity hairstylist Frank Barbosa returned actress Kara Hayward’s hair to its natural hue using a mixture of Neutral Light Brown with Light Ash Brown on the mid-shaft to ends.  He left out some of the golden color wrapped in foil with IT&LY Pure Conditioner.

To establish an Ombré effect, he used Light Ash Brown on her root area.  Then he added a shade darker (4N) within the Delyton demi-permanent series after she processed for additional depth and shine.

The hair color on SATC2 was amazing. Frank Barbosa's shared his Hair Color Tips for the SATC2 film which included:

1)  My favorite techniques for coloring for the big screen are to color in a 3 tier circular pattern.  I take very thin slices of 3 to 4 base colors in the same tonal range from either the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Colorly 20/20 or Aquarly color lines.  This made  for interesting movement and definition of the hair.  It's a time consuming technique, but the end result is amazing.

2)  I always seal hair with glazing shine like Pure Water Drops to give that Hollywood finished look. What we see in the results is healthy shiny beautiful hair.

3) It's so important to utilize a non sulfate shampoo like Purity Design's Pure Shampoo, or similar, to keep color regulated throughout filming.  It's also important to use an acid rinse to close the cuticles and keep color in the hair.

Otherwise it could oxidize out due to the elements of sun, swimming, and cleansing with hard or similar.

4) I also recommend a head scarf hat or sunscreen for your hair. There are many fashionable brands to pick from today.

1. Begin with a basic blow out, then spritz hair with René Furterer finishing spray instant hold to create a foundation.

2. Using a curling iron with a 1½-inch barrel, wrap hair around the iron without opening it then secure it under the clamp.

3. After unraveling the curl from the iron, pull the curl out by running your fingers through it. Repeat around entire head.

4.  Finish off the look with a few spritzes of René Furterer Fioravanti no rinse detangling spray to add shine.
