On the second episode of the second season of Girls which aired on Sunday, January 20th, Hannah (Lena Dunham) is chilling in the park with her long haired quirky friend Jessa Johansson (Jemina Kirke) and three puppies. In the first season Jessa shocked Hannah by impulsively marrying the much older and wealthy Thomas-John (Chris O'Dowd) at a free-spirited surprise wedding.
Hannah consistently struggles with forming happy, fulfilling romantic relationships with men, her parents and her friends. While in the park Hannah asks Jessa for advice about her new lover who she worries about because he's a Republican.
Jessa chides Hannah for always over thinking things. The newlywed tells Hannah the only things which matter in a relationship is that your (astrological) rising signs are compatible, the sex is decent and they support you creatively. Hannah ponders Jessa's happy relationship advice and proclaims she doesn't know her guy's rising sign.
What Is A Rising Sign?
The rising sign is also known as the ascendant as well as the first house of the natal chart. The first house of each person's natal chart is calculated based upon the exact time of the person's birth and is listed by astrological sign as well as exact degree and minute. Many astrologers believe the rising sign is as important in a natal chart as the Sun and Moon.

The rising sign, which is on the first house of the natal chart, is considered very important by many astrologers since it signifies the personality, attitudes, overall health and general appearance. The rising sign symbolizes how people present them self to the world, especially in public and impersonal situations. The ascendant may function as a filter or mask, hiding the true inner nature which is indicated by the rest of the natal chart.
Are Compatible Ascendant Signs Important?
Jessa definitely made a good point about the importance of a couple's ascendant sign compatibility. Many astrologers preparing detailed compatibility charts for couples will start with a comparison of the two individual ascendant signs. As astrologer Gladys M. Hall pointed out in Basic Predictive Astrology, "the greatest unhappiness a couple may face results from the blending of inharmonious" ascendant or rising signs.
When a couple's charts are evaluated for compatibility, most astrologers will take the natal chart of one person and place the partner's planets around the outside of the first person's natal chart.
Although an astrological compatibility chart is a good indicator of the potential success or failure of any type of partnership, the natal charts of both individuals must be studied in detail.
The birth chart alone promises either ultimate success or failure in partnerships. While compatible ascendant signs can definitely help a couple weather a long term relationship, the natal charts will ultimately provide the final answers.
The good news? If your natal chart has partnership challenges there are many tools, astrological and non-astrological, to help you deal with those challenges.
Compatible Rising Signs
Listed below are the rising signs generally considered to be the most compatible. This list does not take into consideration other astrological factors such as the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars or the natal chart.
It also doesn't factor in natal chart planetary positions, aspects, transits, progressions or related types of statistics.
Aries - Fire Sign - Compatible with Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Gemini
Taurus - Earth Sign - Compatible with Virgo, Capricorn, Pisces and CancerGemini - Air Sign - Compatible with Libra, Aquarius, Aries and Leo
Cancer - Water Sign - Compatible with Scorpio, Pisces, Virgo and TaurusLeo - Fire Sign - Compatible with Sagittarius, Aries, Gemini and Libra
Virgo - Earth Sign - Compatible with Capricorn, Taurus, Cancer and ScorpioLibra - Air Sign - Compatible with Aquarius, Gemini, Leo and Sagittarius
Scorpio - Water Sign - Compatible with Pisces, Cancer, Virgo and CapricornSagittarius - Fire Sign - Compatible with Aries, Leo, Libra and Aquarius
Capricorn - Earth Sign - Compatible with Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio and PiscesAquarius - Air Sign - Compatible with Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius and Aries
Pisces - Water Sign - Compatible with Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn and TaurusDefining Compatible Rising Signs
As a general rule whatever natal house the other person's ascendant falls into will define the type of relationship which develops. As an example if the Ascendant of person A falls into the eleventh house (friends, groups of people) of person B, the relationship will most likely be based upon a friendship. Natal planets and aspects can also play an important part when doing an analysis of the two rising signs for compatibility.
As an example, if person A's natal Uranus falls in person B's first house or conjunct their ascendant, sparks can fly and major attraction can occur. On the flip side, if Mars or any of the other so-called malefic or challenging planets fall into the first or conjunct the ascendant, the relationship can be difficult and involving fighting and/or power struggles.
A full-blown astrological compatibility chart usually involves many detailed comparisons between the two charts and offers insight into the resulting relationship from many views.
Compatible Rising Signs For Other Types Of Relationships
Of course relationship analysis is not limited to just love and marital relationships. These rules of rising sign analysis and comparison also translate to any type of relationships you have in your life from your parents, friends and employers to your hairstylist, massage therapist and even your pets. Yes, having a good compatibility chart with the various people in your life can make life flow smoother.
In some cases such as your parents, siblings, employers or employees, it's impossible to select who you're involved with. However, a comparison chart can offer you insight into how to make a challenging relationship work even better.
Summary - Girls And Compatible Ascendant Signs
Not everyone believes in astrology, but it's value has been recognized for centuries by a wide variety of people. Many business and world leaders utilize astrology to help them achieve their various goals.
Although this blog obviously is not about hair, astrology is one of my other true passions. I've been studying the art since my early teens and the topic is often playing in my head. I was absolutely thrilled when beautiful Taurean native Lena Dunham chose to incorporate a reference to rising signs in the dialogue between two of the characters on Girls. It was an interesting, amusing and appropriate reference. It also gave me pause for thought and prompted me to dash off a short blog about it.
I only wish I was able to locate information on Lena's ascendant. Although she's born under the sign of Taurus, the very talented star, writer, director and producer has her natal moon in Cancer. That explains why she can relate to easily to the challenges of women her age. It also explains her amazing ability to translate her thoughts and feelings into great scripts.
Hopefully Lena will expand on the topic of astrology in future episodes of Girls. Even if she doesn't, I will be watching this amazing show. Please follow us on Twitter at: https://Twitter.com/HairBoutique. I look forward to meeting new people from all walks of Twitter and learning from their Tweets.
