Hilarie Burton (born July 1, 1982) recently appeared on Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Lauren Boswell, a new craniofacial specialist.   During the season finale Dr. Boswell seduces Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) putting  her marriage to Dr. Callie Torres at serious risk.

Besides throwing a major monkey wrench into the long romantic Robbins/Torres plot line, the actress turned heads with her edgy Hilarie Burton hair chop.   The former host of MTV's Total Request Live looked stunning in her sleek hair chop which is one of the hottest new hairstyles for 2013.

Hilarie who also currently stars as Sara Ellis on USA's White Collar is loved by many fans for her portrayal of Peyton Sawyer on The CW's One Tree Hill for six seasons (2003-2009).

Hilarie Burton Hair Chop How To

This year's latest hair trend, a favorite of model Karlie Kloss, is referred to as a chop because it is an effortless, easy, low-maintenance style which looks natural, sassy and sexy.  The chop combines elements of a classic bob with a layered crop.

The hairstyle can be styled sleek and elegant or tousled and flirty.   If the chop haircut is combined with precision crafted color such as highlights, low lights or Ombre, it's elevated to superstar hairstyle status.

Listed below is a step by step guide on re-creating the Hilarie Burton hair chop:

1.  Begin with a blunt hair cut scissored or razor ed into long choppy layers falling near or below the cheekbones.  The length should extend somewhere between the bottom of the chin and the top of the collarbone.

2.  Hilarie opts for a long side-swept fringe which sweeps over one eye.  Optionally the chop haircut can be partnered with a blunt fringe extending to the bridge of the nose.

3.  To amp up the style ask your colorist to apply Balayage in pieces slightly off the root.

Cleanse & Dry

4.  Cleanse detangled hair in lukewarm water with a formula designed for your hair type, texture and current condition.  If your hair is chemically colored or treated, utilize a formula designed to address those needs or one which is very hydrating.   If you prefer, opt for a modified formula such as Diluted Shampoo (DS), Low Poo, No Poo, Conditioner Only Wash (CoW) or Water only.

5.  Rinse shampoo completely out of hair.

6.  Apply a rinse-out conditioner to hair which is designed for your hair type, texture and condition.  Skip this step if your hair is fine, thin, oily or tends to easily flatten.

7.  Use fingers and/or wide tooth comb to detangle and distribute rinse-out conditioner through hair from the ends up to the roots.

8.  Rinse conditioner completely from strands and finish with a cool/cold water rinse.

9.  Towel blot strands with a towel.

Style & Finish

10.  Apply a styling cocktail which may include, but not be limited to a light leave-in conditioner, defrisant (to prevent frizz) and/or a mousse or a styling cream and/or gel to add texture.  If you want to add volume apply a root lifter.

11.  Use fingers to tousle hair while blow drying.  To enhance texture use a long or short finger diffuser to lift individual sections of hair as you dry.  For a sleek straight finish use a paddle or round rush and direct hair down the length of individual strands from the roots to the ends.

12.  For a sleek finish, run a {{asin=B004HFGLOI,text=small straightening iron}} over all the strands.

Finish with 1-2 drops of shine serum or similar finish.  Use hairspray to create a light hold.

Summary

Hilarie Burton rocked this year's latest hair trend, the sassy low-maintenance chop in a recent appearance on the finale of TV's Grey's Anatomy.  The hairstyle is called a chop because it combines the best features of a bob and a crop.

This hairstyle can be worn from below chin length to just above the collarbone.

The chop is effortless, easy and low-maintenance which can be worn tousled and edgy or sleek and sophisticated.

Split ends are a separation of the hair shaft that exposes hair's fragile inner layers. The only real cure for split ends is to have them trimmed.
