Listed below in no particular order are the top 10 dry shampoos. Select the one which works best with your hair type, texture, length and current condition.

1.  Cornmeal - Believe it or not, this is the most popular DIY all natural dry shampoo favored by hair consumers around the globe.

It has the added benefit of working great for blondes who have golden hues. Although it can be use on any type or hair, it will add a very faint hint of highlights to blondes. Cornmeal has the added benefit of leaving hair shiny.

2.  Cornstarch - My personal favorite, it's great for blondes or those with white or gray tones.

A little bit goes a long way. Cornstarch may not be the best dry shampoo for people with medium to dark brunette hued strands.

3.  Salt - Kosher and/or coarse salt is also popular with the DIY dry shampoo crowd.Unlike table salt, which is too fine for dry shampoo use, Kosher or coarse salt is excellent for gently exfoliating the scalp.

It also will do a great job at removing oil buildup. Just be very careful to keep it out of your eyes.

4.  Semolina flour - Semolina is the coarse, purified wheat middlings of durum wheat used in making pasta, breakfast cereals, puddings, and couscous.

It's light colored and similar to cornmeal.

5. Orris Root Powder - This violet scented white powder has enjoyed a good reputation in the perfume industry.

Widely used in face and body powders, some people do experience allergic reactions to the product.

While it works great as an alternative to cornstarch, start slow with use to test for allergic indications.

9.  Baking Soda - Although popular as part of a dry shampoo mixture, many people do not find baking soda as the best dry shampoo mixture when it's used without other ingredients.

Popular DIY dry shampoo recipes often use baking soda as a key ingredient. If you feel you might like baking soda alone, start by trying it on a very small section of your hair.

10.Baking Powder Colored Mixtures - For people with brunette or red tresses, there are a variety of cornstarch based dry shampoo mixtures which take advantage of added ingredients:

Cocoa Powder For Brunettes - If you have really dark hair, mix cocoa powder with cornstarch and baking soda.

Adjust cocoa powder as needed. Use two tablespoons every time. Make sure you don't use too much cocoa powder or if it get warm it may become sticky.

A popular recipe includes 1/4 cup cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon baking soda and 2 tablespoons cocoa powder. Beware of adding too much cocoa powder which will turn hair really dark.

Keep the amount of cocoa powder less than the amount of cornstarch and baking soda. If the heat from your hands and head warm the cocoa powder too much, it may in rare instances create a gooey mess.

Hibiscus Powder For Redheads - works well as a dry shampoo for some with red hair. It's a relatively light power and doesn't leave a white powder residue since the powder is naturally a dark red.

It can be used alone or mixed with cornstarch.

Start with 1/4th cup of cornstarch and 1 tablespoon of baking powder mixed with 2 tablespoons of hisbiscus powder. If you want a deeper red hue, increase the amount of hibiscus powder.

How To Make Dry Shampoo

Whether you're using one ingredient of a mixture, always use a clean sterilized glass jar with a screw top. I find clean baby jars or small Mason or Ball jars to be ideal containers.

Always store the dry shampoo in a cool dry area of your house.

One you've created your dry shampoo, start with a tiny bit sprinkled onto your fingertips and lightly massaged onto your roots. Finger fluff and pick to distribute the shampoo.  Use a 100% boar bristle brush or similar to brush out any remaining powder.

Summary - Top 10 Dry Shampoos

Like hair, not all dry shampoos are created equally.   While some of the best dry shampoo can be fabulous, others can leave strands a sticky, white mess.

Although I've listed the top 10 dry shampoos which are most popular by DIYers, this is certainly not all the dry shampoo formulations you can try.

Some hair types, textures and lengths will respond better to some dry shampoo products than others. Experiment with oat bran, cinnamon or ginger mixed with cornstarch or a variety of other options which might suit your fancy.
