Mini Twists Are Two Strand Twists
Theoretically mini twists, very similar to Two Strand Twists, can be done on any type, texture and length of hair. What is good in theory is not always good in practice. Two Strand Twists are ideally done on naturally textured hair which is ideally 4-6 inches in length to hold the twists in place.
Two strand twists work as a natural protective hairstyle or can be used to ultimately achieve a Twist Out when the Mini Twists are removed.
The tighter the twists, which should not be confused with micro braids, the longer they will last.
Carefully created mini twists, when hydrated and maintained appropriately, can last anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks.
At the end of that type period, the mini twists can be released to achieve a beautiful Twist Out hairstyle.
Mini Twists May Not Work For Everyone
Although some naturals do their own mini twists, others have their hair twisted for them.
If you've never done mini twists or similar styles on your hair, be sure to do lots of research or visit a hairdresser who specializes in twists.
It's possible this hairstyle may not work for all types, textures and lengths of hair.
How To Do Mini Twists
Mini twists, especially ones which are consistently, tightly and uniformly twisted can take a very long time to create.
Never attempt to create mini twists without allowing a lot of time and the assistance of a friend in case encounter unexpected challenges.
It's highly recommended mini twists be created on freshly wet washed, completely dry and stretched out tresses.
Experts do not recommend twists be created on wet or damp strands which may become frizzy, knotted or damaged.
Hydration Is Key
Before twisting spray each completely detangled target section of hair to be twisted with a hydrating leave-in conditioner, hair butter, grease or similar product.
Apply almond, olive, jojoba or similar oil to the ends to condition, protect and seal.
Use a double sided comb and separate hair into 4 equal sections.
Work on only one section at a time making sure to clip up the remaining sections to prevent wandering strands.
Twist slowly and consistently taking very small sections of hair, approximately the diameter of a pencil, and two twist until the hair it completely twisted.
Work Slowly And Consistently
Remember to work slowly in order to make sure all of the sections are twisted the same size and tightness to create a uniform look.
Work in small sections to avoid frizz.
At the end of each individual twist you can secure the strand in some fashion or twist around a finger to create a small looped curl to hold the twist.Once all of your hair is two strand twisted, experiment with a variety of different styles to add variety of looks. You're only limited by your imagination.
Tymberlee often wears the sides pulled up and smoothed over the top of her twists and secured in back a few inches behind the crown.
