One of the biggest causes of premature permanent hair color fading is sun exposureSun exposure is one of the most potentially damaging seasons for color hair.

If you want to extend your gorg hair color for longer time periods, you can take preventative measures to extend your hue life for 4-6 weeks past the normal fade date.

Most permanent hair color will retain its initial vibrancy for 4-6 weeks before it starts to fade.

Permanent color also grows out from the roots.

After neglecting root touch-up treatments for an extended period of time, root regrowth from the natural hue will over take the colored hair.

Listed below are some of the best ways to extend gorg hair color for 4-6 weeks longer:

1.  Ask your hair colorist to apply a protective clear gloss at the end of your color service to seal in the shade, helping to extend the color.

Note:  Ask for a gloss, which penetrates and not a glaze which doesn't penetrate and is designed to add up shine.  A gloss can last 2-4 weeks and a glaze may only last up to 2 weeks and is must less protective.

2.  If you do your own DIY home hair color, opt for an at-home gloss treatment.  One to try is {{asin=B00GMP1S3U,text=John Frieda Luminous Glaze Clear Shine Gloss}} which combines the benefits of both a protective glaze and a shine enhancing gloss.*

3.  Don't wet cleanse your hair for 48-60 hours after the color treatment.  Allowing your natural hair oils to return will help maintain your color longer.

If you have a hard time going such a long time between wet washes, spot clean using a dry cleanser or shampoo.

If you must get your hair wet, use a water wash only after 48 hours, but avoid using any cleansers or conditioner.  Use the coolest water you can handle to prevent newly added color from leeching out of the cuticle.

4.  When you do your first post-color wet cleansing, use lukewarm water bordering on cool.  Use a shampoo and conditioners designed to protect and extend colored hair.

Wet wash only as needed.  Using a color safe shampoo is more important than the conditioner.

Why?  The wrong kind of shampoo can strip away beautiful color.

Volumizing shampoos and conditioners may encourage hair fading faster due to the goals of expanding the cuticle.  Some strong dandruff and/or medicated shampoos may also strip or fade hair color.

Other types of harsh shampoo formulas, clarifying products or similar not designed to protect hair color may also trigger significant fading.

5.  Use dry washing as much as possible to extend wet wash cycles.   The longer you can go between wet washing sessions, the longer your hair color will maintain it's initial vibrancy.

6. Air dry as much as possible.  Minimize or eliminate the use of hot tools such as blow dryers, irons and hot rollers which accelerate hair color fading.

Celebrity colorist Louis Licari was quoted in Glamour Magazine in the June 2006 issue as saying "heat from blow-dryers and flat irons fades dye."

Licari told Glamour "If you must use them, first apply a heat protectant."

7.  Minimize the use of hot oils which can open the cuticle and encourage the color to wash down the drain when you rinse it out.

8.  Avoid exposure to pool and/or spa chemicals.  Chlorinated water can do some significant damage to colored hair.  If you must expose your hair to pool or spa water, wear a protective cap, no matter how unattractive it may be.

9.  Wear hair in protective hairstyles like braids, twists and buns to minimize exposure to the environment.

10.  Minimize and/or avoid sun exposure without protective gear.

Sun Exposure 411

The more intense the sun, the greater your exposure to UV rays and the higher the risk of accelerated hair color fading.  The best decision is to always keep colored hair completely covered with any type of protective head wear (hats, wigs, scarves or similar).

If you must expose your hair color to the sun, learn the basics of sun exposure and when your hair color is most at risk for increased fading.  Listed below are some well-known sun exposure hair facts:

1.  Time of Day - Sun damage to colored hair is most likely when the sun is highest in the skin (10 am - 4 pm).   If you must go out without a head covering, try to go out  before 10 am and after 4 pm.

2.  Summertime - From May to August (in the United States) it's more risky for colored hair to be in the sun than other times of the year.   The exception?  When snow is present, it can reflect 85% to 90% of the sun's UV rays.

3.  Altitude - UV exposure is much higher in the mountains than in the valleys, which is why people get sunburned while skiing at high altitudes.

4.  Geographic location - The sun is always the strongest at the equator.  The closer you are to the equator, the more damage the sun can do.

5.  Length of exposure - The longer you spend time in the sun, the more risk you have of suffering from sun exposure.

Sun exposure can even occur through some glass on windows. Even a short walk or drive can expose you to the sun.
