The #1 hair culprit when it comes to frizzy hair is a roughed up hair cuticle.
Not all people will experience frizz. Fuzzy, tangled, knotted, dry and unruly hair tends to be most prevalent when hair is naturally coarse, textured or damaged.
Some hair is genetically predisposed to frizzing.
Frizz can occur randomly, regularly or both. Frizz may occur only around the hairline, throughout the fringe, along the ends, on the top layers only, along the crown or throughout the entire hair shaft.
If you battle frizz and want to prevent it, consider adopting some or all of the 19 best frizz fighting tips listed below which start by smoothing out the hair cuticle.
Hair which is naturally straight, silky, prone to oiliness or fine/thin may or may not benefit from the following tips.
Follow the tips according to your own hair needs and behaviors.
Talk to 19 different hair experts and they might all have a slightly different opinion about the best products to fight frizz.
Usually most hair experts will agree on the basic techniques for creating a smooth cuticle and blocking the formation of gnarly frizz.
Listed below are 19 of the best frizz fighting tips from my own experiences:
1. Keep it cool - Unless your hair is packed with dirt and gunk, wet wash hair in lukewarm or borderline cool water. The hotter the water you use, the more you risk frizz.
2. Avoid cuticle ruffling - Wash with hydrating shampoo, cleanser or desired wet wash formula (diluted shampoo, conditioner only, water only, combination). Remember, less is more. Wet wash only as needed.3. Seal cuticle with conditioner - Rinse all of the shampoo or cleanser completely from hair. Gently squeeze out excess water. Seal the cuticle by applying a smoothing rinse-out conditioner. Experiment by adding 1/2 to 1/4th teaspoon of real mayonnaise to your rinse-out conditioner for an extra smoothing kick.
4. Detangle wet to avoid damage - Use a smooth hair friendly wide tooth or fingers to detangle hair while conditioner is still on the hair. Detangle slowly from ends to roots in small 2" sections.5. Finish with cold - Always end a hair washing with a cool/cold water rinse to close the cuticle and smooth each strand down. Smooth strands equal frizz free tresses.
6. Blot properly - Remove excess water by blotting with an uber soft cotton t-shirt or special hair friendly towel which is gentle on the cuticles. Avoid rubbing or tousling wet hair.
7. Step out of the steam - Frizz is more prone to developing near humid or steamy conditions. After you shower, be sure to product cocktail, dry and style your hair in a room separate from your original steamy shower location.
8. Cocktail wisely - Protect from cuticle lifting during heat styling. Apply a styling cocktail to damp hair (some get better results with hair which is soaking wet) which addresses frizz causing issues. Mix an anti-frizz leave-in with a hydrating styling cream. Adjust accordingly to your hair type, texture and current condition.9. Filter heat - If you must use hot tools to dry and/or style, block frizz causing heat with a thermal protective spray or similar product. A good thermal spray will smooth the cuticle, eliminate frizz and provide protection from dehydrating heat. It will also lock in the desired hairstyle.
10. Build body - When frizz takes over, hair may feel limp or lifeless. You may wish to add a volumizing mousse or spray to roots or target areas to counter against flat strands.
11. Always marinate - After you apply your styling cocktail and/or your thermal spray, allow the products to marinate on your hair for 5-10 minutes. This gives the products a change to completely integrate with the cuticle.
12. Finger dry - For a sleeker finish, use a long finger diffuser attached to a blow dryer set to the slowest, coolest possible setting. If you prefer, you can finger pick with a blow dryer set on cool/cold with a concentrator attachment. Dry hair until it is 70-percent dry.Note: It will take longer when you blow dry on cool or cold, but it will keep hair sleek and frizz free. If you don't have a cool or cold setting on your blow dryer, use the cool shot button, if available. Experiment with air drying, although some find air drying more frizz generating.
13. Divide and conquer - After drying hair approximately 70%, separate hair into small sections. Use a mixed boar bristle Mason Pearson paddle style brush. Blow dry each section straight using the brush as the anchor. Work around the head from side to side drying each of the section straight until hair is 100% dry.
14. Cool and set - The most important trick to blocking frizz and keeping hair stick straight all day long is to make sure it's 100% cool before applying any final hair products.
Note: It's important to make sure all of the hair is completely cool before applying hairspray or shine spray. Heat styling alters the hair texture, but the cooling down process is what seals the cuticle, locks in the style, and blocks frizz.
15. Palm it - Once hair is cool, spray hairspray onto the palms of your hands and massage together. Lightly smooth hairspray coated hands over the top of the finished hairstyle from roots to ends. This helps maintain sleekness without ruffling the roots.
For extra protection, apply a small amount of frizz protection spray or cream, massage into the palms of your hands and lightly brush over the top of your finished hairstyle.
16. Maintenance is key - Once you've learned how to achieve smooth, sleek, frizz free strands, extend their life as long as possible by deploying great maintenance techniques.
17. Frizz free beauty sleep - Protect sleek strands by sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcases.18. Mop up the grease - Utilize a small amount of dry shampoo to spot remove oil and grease on 2nd or 3rd day hair. Avoid dry brushing hair as much as possible which can cause frizz and fuzzy strands.
If you dry cleanse, finger pick tresses to remove dry shampoo. Unless styling, keep your disruptive hands and fingers out of your hair.
19. Carry a frizz fighting kit - Even in the best of circumstances sudden weather changes can bring on sudden frizz. Always have emergency back up frizz fighting tools close at hand. Your kit should be loaded with frizz fighting goodies such as Ted Gibson Hair Sheets, light detangling sprays like {Johnson and Johnson Buddies No More Tangles Easy Comb or similar which will help smooth frizz, frizz fighting pomade, regular dryer sheets or hand cream.
It's also important to minimize stress which can lead to hair frizz by eating properly, taking vitamins and supplements, getting proper rest and hydration.
Avoid excessive use of alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs and exposure to the sun.
