Actor Matthew Gray Gubler is a classic example of a long male layered hairstyle.

As Dr. Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds on the CBS Television Network, the former runway model rocks a classic long male layered hairstyle with panache.

From Edgy Skater Boys To Sexy Professionals

The popular male cut, which traditionally has been showcased by edgy skater boys, surfers and bad boy rockers has a more squared shape.

Just as long hair on women has become much more popular over the past few years, the same can be said of me.

The long male layered hairstyle is a great compromise for professional men who want the sexy edge while looking polished.

One Size Does Not Fit All Hair Types & Textures

Although Matthew wears this classic style just below his ears, it can be worn collar or shoulder length without compromising the integrity of the hair cut's shape.

Although it can be worn on stick straight hair, it will require styling products, a brush and blow dryer to create movement and flow.

Ultimately it's ideal for hair which has some bend and can be air dried.

It's also great for strands which have a medium wave pattern.   It's not the best cut for fine or fine hair.

Definite & Square Weighted Area

While haircuts for females are traditionally more rounded and curved, haircut's like Matthew's have more defined square shapes and weighted areas.

The long male layered haircut originates from classical men's barbering techniques.  The style has a precision layered effect with longer lengths.  It has a definite finely tapered style and design.

The sideburns are cut with a scissor-over-comb technique.

They have to be just right since the side burn area plays a key role in defining and tying together the entire look.

A Man's Haircut With Balance & Symmetry

The long male layered haircut like Matthew's is generally started at a central area of the head to establish balance and symmetry.  The center back of the head is a neutral position and the hair is often the thickest in this area.

By starting at the center back the barber or stylist is better able to establish control.

As in the case of Matthew, styling is kept natural with a center or long or short side part.  A lot depends upon the hair's natural texture.

Creating Harmony With Natural Hair Texture, Type & Condition

When the haircut is created in harmony with the natural texture, type and condition of the hair.

This long layered silhouette provides textural movement and dimension.  The layers begin at nose level and progress to below-the-ear, collar-length or slightly below-the-collar.

The recession areas at the front hairline and crown are used as basic cut guidelines.

1.  Wet wash detangled strands in lukewarm water with formula compatible with hair type, texture and condition.

2.  Rinse completely.

3.  Apply a rinse-out conditioner to the middle and ends of hair.  Focus product on sections requiring hydration.

4.  Detangle individual sections with a hair friendly wide toothed comb.

5.  Rinse completely.

6.  Finish with a cool to cold final rinse.

7.  Accordion squeeze down the length of the hair from roots to ends to remove excess water

8.  Blot with a clean cotton t-shirt or similar cloth.  Avoid rough towels.

9.  Remove 50% of the moisture

10.  Apply a styling cocktail which includes, but isn't limited to a leave-in conditioner, styling lotion, gel or glaze-like

product.

11.  Use your fingers to scrunch hair to emphasize natural texture or take individual curls and twist them into ringlets.

12.  Let hair air dry completely.

13.  For a more tousled look use fingers to light rake through hair or bend over at the waist and lightly shake strands.

14.  Optionally you can use a paddle brush and a blow dryer to create loose movement.

Or use a long finger diffuser attached to a blow dryer.

If possible, blow dry on the slowest, coolest setting  to minimize damage to strands.

Summary - Long Male Layered

This long male layered haircut showcased in various lengths and stages of tousle by Matthew Gray Gubler is very popular for men with medium to thick hair which is naturally textured.

It can be worn edgy or finished for a more professional look.

Unfortunately this cut and style is not ideal for all hair types, textures and conditions, but it can be modified to work with all different face shapes.

It would not work well for certain thinning conditions.  Work with a skilled barber or stylist to get the best cut possible customized for you.

Long hair on men is gaining ground and has become very popular.  This is an ideal cut and style for any male who wants to grow their hair longer into a ponytail stage or below the shoulders.

Don't be surprised to see this longer male cut and hairstyle showing up on more super hero on TV and in the movies in the upcoming months.
