Milady's Standard Hair Coloring Manual And Activities Book : A Level System Approach

by Deb Rangl

If you really want to know about hair coloring, this is the book to buy.   This book was designed for hair stylists who do color work at a salon, but it is an easy and informative read for anyone interested in the art of coloring hair.  I was so fascinated with this book that I just could not put it down until I had read all 150 page and had taken all the hair coloring tests that are included in this book.

This book began originally as a lesson plan for advanced hair color classes for a chain of cosmetology schools.  The style of the book is therefore designed to look like a textbook with specific lessons.  As far as I am concerned it makes learning the concepts easy and is generally a helpful approach.

Chapter one of this book starts out by explaining the Shade System.  This is the original hair coloring system that was used as a permanent, penetrating tint.   The Shade System measures color by its tonal value, such as reds, naturals, golds, brown and so forth.  While many hair technicians still work with the Shade System, most manufacturers today promote the Level System as easier and as producing higher quality results.  This shade versus level system information was worth the price of the book alone.  I had no idea there was any type of system even used.

This fantastic book goes on to explain the advantages of the Level System and goes from there into the complete theory of color.  Deb Rangl also explains the six important reasons why clients even want to color or highlight their hair in the first place.  The reasons are very informative and some reasons that I had never considered.  Deb Rangl explains why it is important to understand the motivation for wanting to color the hair.

This 14 chapter book covers everything, and I do mean everything, that you could possibly want to know about coloring your hair.  It even included tests on each chapter with answers in the back of the book.  There is a great Glossary of terms which is also very helpful.

Although this book was designed for cosmetology students and professionals, it is very easy to read and understand for the layperson.  If you have an interest in hair coloring, this is a great book to buy and study.  I strongly recommend it.
