Milady's Black Cosmetology

Milady's Black Cosmetology

by Thomas Hayden and James Williams

I really have enjoyed all the Milady books that I have purchased over the past few years.  Even though they are written in a textbook format, the chapters are well written and contain step by step instructions, figures, line drawings and tables.   Each chapter has review questions with the answers included at the back of the book.

The Hayden and Williams book is written to address the care and styling of Black hair.   This 175 page book is jammed with great information including a detailed section on cornrowing techniques.  The book also includes chapters on brushing and combing, detangling, shampooing, dealing with physically relaxed hair, conditioning, moisturizers, conditioning for chemically processed hair, french braiding, plait braiding, forty-strand braiding, general braiding tips, hair shaping, styling, chemical relaxing, soft perm waving and thermal styling.  There is also a chapter on hair structure, hair coloring, hair lightening and skin and makeup.

Most of the figure examples are either black and white photos or figure drawings.   There are very few color photos included in this book.  This seems to be a standard practice for all of the Milady Books.  The absence of colored photos does not detract from the book in any way.  The figures and drawings that are included are well done and very informative.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in dealing with Black hair.
