by Walter P. Unger This is a very expensive, fact filled book written by a medical doctor who is considered to be an expert on hair transplantation. This book was published in 1995 and is on its third revision. Dr. Unger, M.D. was a professor of medicine (dermatology) when he published the first version of this book back in 1979. He received his M.D. in 1963 from the University of Toronto. Dr. Unger's current edition of this book provides a detailed and clinical overview of all the various means of surgically correcting alopecia. This revised and expanded edition returns to the format of the first one (1979), describing in detail Unger's personal approach to each component of graft transplanting, and then discussing why he chose them over options used by other surgeons. In addition, there is a lengthy chapter in which respected surgeons elaborate on how their approach differs to Unger's, and why. Finally, there is a new chapter on recent advances in concepts, instruments, and techniques, which for the most part were presented at the second annual meeting of the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery in Toronto in September 1994. This book is probably the most detailed medically oriented book available on the topic of hair transplantation. The book is hard to find and very expensive. I have the original version and have looked at the most recent edition. They are very similar although the current edition has been updated to include all the latest medical advances in the field. The book has lots of photos, black and white and colored, and detailed descriptions and information. Dr. Unger goes to great lengths to explain all the possible complications, the advantages and disadvantages and the medical indications. If you want a factual medically oriented book that will tell you all the risks and all the steps you will experience with a hair transplant, this book is probably one of the better books available. From that perspective I would recommend this book. It is a little on the dry side, but it is written from a medical viewpoint, so dryness is not such a bad thing.
