Celebrity Hair: LeAnn Rimes

Introduction

LeAnn Rimes Society of Singers 14th Annual Ella Awards 10-10-05

When you're a famous celebrity songbird like LeAnn Rimes, image and appearance are almost as crucial to success as the beautiful melodies that float from your mouth.

Whether the music critics compare the 23 year old star to rock legend Janis Joplin or not, LeAnn is strongly rooted in the country music world.

The country music trademark hairstyles of yesteryear which included Brenda Lee bouffants and Dolly Parton teased wigs, have all but faded away. Even Dolly has toned it down a lot over the last few years.

LeAnn is a classic example of what time, a great fashion stylist (Trish Townsend) and ever evolving hairstyles can do for building a fabulous image that wins big kudos without the big hair.

Whether belting out a new hit on tour or walking Hollywood's Red Carpets, LeAnn has come a long way from her 1997 when she made her Grammy debut in a teased out big hairdo that was out of the era of Patsy Kline.

By the year 2000 LeAnn had traded in her traditional big Country tresses for a more toned down coif.

Gone was the big pouffy mane and in its place was a cascade of very blonde curls with front accent braids. Although it wasn't her best look, it was a temporary transition towards her ultimate sleek look of today.

Over the years LeAnn has traded in her fuzzy curled perms and teasing comb for straight irons, a great colorist and some very hot hairstyles.

LeAnn has told the media she prefers to wear her hair long in light layers because it offers a lot of versatility. In addition, she likes to style her hair herself when she is not getting read to walk the Red Carpers.

Steal LeAnn's Updo

In October of 2005 LeAnn took to the Red Carpets at the 8th Annual Lili Claire Foundation Benefit held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

She had her beautifully highlighted blonde tresses elegantly woven into a soft chignon with a sexy array of side swept soft curls hugging one side of her face.

Her hair was a perfect complement for her simple but elegant little black dress. LeAnn's only accessories were a pair of shimmering diamond drop earrings, a stunning matching bracelet, a long chin necklace and her handsome husband on her arm.

Although LeAnn had access to a team of top hairdressers for her updo, with a little time and practice it would be possible to steal her style. LeAnn's style is ideal for anyone with shoulder length hair that is medium textured.

Follow the steps listed below to recreate LeAnn's stunning style:

1. Start by selecting a shampoo with a color safe formula to preserve any gorgeous blonde highlights or hues like LeAnn's current golden shade. Otherwise, select a shampoo that works with your current texture, type and condition of hair.

2. Apply a rinse out conditioner that works for your hair's normal texture, type and condition. Consider trying a color co-ordinated mask to intensify your existing color.

3. Finish with a cool/cold rinse to close the cuticle and help add natural shine.

4. Towel blot (never rub or rough dry) to remove excess water.

5. Coat damp strands with a customized styling product cocktail containing styling tools such as a defrisant, volume building mousse, gel or other styling products that work best with your hair texture and type.

Conair - Performers - 100% Boars Bristle Full Round Brush - 2 1/2"6. Blow dry using a large round boar's bristle brush (shown to the side - Conair Round Brush) for strong, lasting support. Direct the air flow down from the roots towards the end to build in shine and smooth strands. 7. Use fingers to lift target strands near the roots for desired volume and lift.

8. Use round brush to lightly roll the ends of the hair under.

9. Finish blow drying with blast of cold air, if possible, which sets the style.

10. When hair is 100% dry separate hair into individual 2" sections and set on large hot rollers, or curl with a medium sized curling iron to add movement to the strands.

11. If curling with a curling iron, after working with each section, roll the newly formed curl with your fingers up towards your scalp and pin into place to allow the curl to cool completely. Work around the entire head until all sections have been curled and pinned to the scalp. Spritz lightly with a soft hold hairspray.

If curling with hot rollers, let the curlers completely cool before removing. Once all the rollers have been released, let new curls dangle free before styling. Spritz lightly with a soft hold hairspray.

12. Once curls are completely cool, use a tail comb or brush to create a deep side part on the right of your head like LeAnn's style.

13. Direct the hair from the part into a sweep of hair that is swept across the forehead to the left side of the head. Separate out a section of hair along the left side of the head (opposite from the part) and allow it to remain loose.

14. Use your fingers or a boar's head brush to direct all of the rest of the hair back into a very soft ponytail (allowing a little softness along the side by the part) that rests at the nape of the neck.

Note: Only one side of the head should have the loose sweep of curls.

15. Capture the pony hair into a Blax or other "hair friendly" bun. Loosely wrap the length of the ponytail hair clockwise over the top of the base of the newly formed pony to form a soft, slightly messy twist. Pin the twist into place against the back of the head with bobby pins the same color as your hair.

16. Spray the new twist with a firm hold hairspray.

17. Use a medium barrel curling iron to create the loose ringlet like curls that dangle seductively from one side of the face.

18. Use fingers to lightly twist the strands and arrange them into a soft curled cascade.

19. Apply a small drop of shine serum and lightly brush over the top of the finished style. If you prefer, use a shine spray product and spray into the palms of your hands and then glide over finished style.

20. If desired, finish the look with a long lasting hairspray for a silky shine effect.

Summary

Thanks to the help of a celebrity stylist and a team of talented makeup and hair gurus, LeAnn Rimes has left her HonkeyTonk Honey roots back in Texas where she grew up. Instead of her big messy curls and brassy blonde tresses, LeAnn is a style icon with a sleek and sophisticated image. The country star's career is also going strong. LeAnn was just nominated for an American Music Award for Favorite Female Country Artist. Which proves that image really does make a difference and helps in the grand scheme of overall success.
