The Lice Treatment Center Now Offers All Natural Lice Treatment Products

Hair products use effective, non-toxic essential oils to treat lice.

The Lice Treatment Center announced today the arrival of its new all natural lice treatment product line, Bon Cheveux, which was developed by a board certified pediatrician.

When faced with an outbreak of head lice that seemed impossible to cure, Elizabeth Solovay and Dr. Elin Cohen put their Ivy League-educated heads together and founded The Lice Treatment Center in Easton, Connecticut.

They developed holistic lice treatment methods and a hair product line that uses a blend of essential oils such as cinnamon, peppermint, neem and tea tree oils.

"Many people don't realize that over-the-counter medications and stronger prescription medications are often ineffective because lice have developed resistance to the active ingredients," said Solovay, co-founder of The Lice Treatment Center and mother of five children ranging in ages from 2 to 16. "These lice treatment products only kill the adult lice and do not kill the nits, which must be physically pulled or combed out of the hair."

Head Lice Are Parasites

Head lice are parasites that live on the scalp and hair and feed on blood. They cause itching and discomfort and are highly contagious. Lice can crawl at a rate of six to 30 centimeters per minute and move onto another person or onto clothing, bedding or furniture then spread to another person. Lice must be treated quickly, because they multiply rapidly. Adult lice lay three to 10 eggs or nits, which are the size of a poppy seed, per day. Because they affix themselves to the hair shaft near the scalp, nits must be removed using a special comb.

"Even though parents typically encourage their children to share with others, when it comes to lice, teaching children not to share is the first line of defense," said Solovay.

She recommends that parents teach children not to share hats, combs, brushes, hair accessories, coats or other personal items. It is also important to not share dress-up clothes with others. Sports can also be a culprit when there is not enough athletic headgear available and children share helmets and other gear between cleanings. Parents are encouraged to remind children to keep their hands out of other people's hair as well.

To treat or prevent lice infestations at home, deep vacuum surfaces frequently with a high-efficiency or HEPA-filtered vacuum, and wash bedding regularly in hot water and dry on high heat. If lice are present, all personal items of the infected person (hats, coats, backpacks, bedding, etc.) must either be disposed or put in a hot dryer for at least 20 minutes. Brushes and combs should be soaked in rubbing alcohol or run through the dishwasher on a hot cycle.

Split ends are a separation of the hair shaft that exposes hair's fragile inner layers. The only real cure for split ends is to have them trimmed.
