Bones Season Finale On Fox - Jumping The Shark In Primetime

Since I have show spoilers below, I want to warn anyone who hasn't seen the Bones Finale to stop reading at this point to avoid getting any information about the last episode of the season.  Unless you want to, then read on.

OK, if you're still reading, I have to start this blog by saying  I adore Bones on Fox/TV.   I have watched the show faithfully since the very first show and it trumps any of my other Thursday night shows.

(Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan (L) and David Boreanaz as FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (R) - FOX/TV - All Rights Reserved).

There is not a single character I don't appreciate.  The plots are always interesting and interwoven with irony and humor.  The interaction between Emily Deschanel's Dr. Brennan (Bones) and David Boreanaz's Agent Booth is as good as it gets.  In a way it reminds me of the old Moonlighting with Cybill Shepard and Bruce Willis.  If you remember that show or saw it on reruns some years ago.

In last week's episode Bones shocked her entire team along with Booth when she announced she wanted to have a baby.  Even more shocking, Bones wanted Booth to be the sperm donor.  It was a great episode.

After an entire season of watching Booth and Bones fight off intense physical attraction and chemistry, the finale held the promise of wrapping up some of the loose ends of the season.

Unfortunately the Bones powers to be (was it Hart Hanson, the creator of the series?) decided to completely scramble the normal format of the wildly popular show.  Instead of the wonderfully engaging cast of characters everyone was playing a completely different role in an odd fantasy sequence which is springing from one of the minds of the regular Bones characters.

Sadly, you don't know who or why the fantasy is occurring until the last five minutes of the show, which I felt was a big mistake.  At least if we would have known at the beginning, it would have made more sense.

(David Boreanaz as FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (R) - FOX/TV - All Rights Reserved).

In this strange final episode of the season, Bones and Booth are actually married to each other and own a nightclub.  The famous crime lab is now staffed with complete strangers with Angela and the regular team working in the nightclub owned by Bones and Booth.

To say I was disappointed in the new plot lines is an understatement.  The first fifteen minutes found me cursing at the screen.  After that point I realized that the entire episode was going to be completely ruined by the odd fantasy sequence.

Not only did the less than appealing shrink, Dr. Sweets (John Francis Daley) narrate the final episode, but he sang.  He did neither very well.

Note: Thank you to my many visitors who let me know that TJ Thyne (Hodgins) and not John Francis Daley was narrating.  My apologies for the inaccuracy.  I have never been great at distinguishing voices and my error here proves that point.

Zack who left the show earlier in the season due to some bizarre murder plot he was involved in, was back for the final.  Why did they get rid of him in the first place?  Zack rocked and the show definitely benefits from his quirky scientific based nerdiness.

(John Francis Daley as Dr. Sweets - FOX/TV - All Rights Reserved).

Hodgins (TJ Thyne) had a strange part as well.  I don't get it.  I loved him with Angela.  Even after they broke up, the sexual tension between the two of them was compelling and interesting to watch.  Would they or wouldn't they get back together?  In the final episode there was no trace of this ongoing plot conflict.  Why???

I just couldn't watch after I realized the show was not going to be the same and nothing was really going to be wrapped up or resolved.

This is how they finish the season?  Why, why, why?

Although the physical chemistry was there with Bones and Booth, everything else was off kilter and so much was lost in the normal character interactions.

How would I summarize the final show of the season?  It sucks.  What have they done to Bones?  Is someone trying to kill it?  Or maybe they are forcing it to jump the shark?  Who made this lame brained decision to destroy one of the best shows on TV?  Did the normal writers get taped up and thrown in a closet while some other writers came in and stole this great show?

(Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan on FOX/TV - All Rights Reserved).

Even worse, I now have to wait all Summer to see if they restore Bones to the way it used to be or it will be forever broken.  If it ain't broken, why fix it?  Why ruin the last show like this?

Of course the reason the fans were cheated out of a great Bones finale was explained at the very end of the episode, which I hated.  It seems that Booth, who at the end of the last episode, had to have emergency surgery for a brain tumor, is dreaming the last episode as a result of being in a coma for four days.  Also, at the very end of the show as Booth is waking up in the hospital room with Bones by his side he has no memory of who she is.

Seriously?  Really?  Please, give me back the Bones I have grown to love so much.  Please spring Zack from jail and put him back in the lab, get Angela and Hodgins back together and please let Bones and Booth get together.

Of course this is purely based on my own humble opinion and I know everyone has their own as well as their own insights into the Season Finale.
