Thea noted that Morgan was nominated for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in the critically acclaimed movie, "Invictus" a film about South Africa's 1995 Rugby World Cup victory
Thea congratulated the actor who said "thank you, thank you very much" and said "I heard you say you were not intimated at all to play Nelson Mandela, but you had met him in real life." Morgan agreed "several times."
Thea "How did that help you capture him on screen?" Morgan "well if you're going to play someone, and everybody knows, it helps to try and look like them and sound like them. So that the audience will say 'oh yeah, he looks like him' rather than make something up. You know?"
Thea "So you spent a little time with him and copied the movements and copied the way he speaks." Morgan "yeah. I studied him very carefully. We all have little things we do. It's the little things that create the character, I think."
Thea "Well you did those little things wonderfully in this movie. Thank you Morgan, Good luck to you."
Sadly Morgan did not win the Golden Globe for his role.
The film was shot entirely in South Africa, with a mainly South African cast and crew, the film chronicles how Nelson Mandela and the country's rugby captain, Francois Pienaar, joined forces to lead the team to an unlikely World Cup victory over the All Blacks with the motto "One team, one country."
Morgan was fabulous as Mandela and Matt Damon played Pienaar.
The name of the film "Invictus means “unconquered,”and is the title of a poem by William Ernest Henley that was a source of inspiration and strength to Nelson Mandela during his 27 years in prison and contains the well-known line “I am the captain of my soul”.
