Flaxseed Hair Defrisant And Styler You Can Make At Home
I've been playing with homemade flaxseed gel since I was in college.
At times I need to add a defrisant to my own naturally wavy/curly hair. My go-to product since 1997 has been Phytodefrisant. It never lets me down and I think it's the best defrisant on the market. Yes, there are other great ones, but that's my favorite.
When I have the time to play I also like to make a homemade flaxseed hair recipe that works for me. Flaxseed is a popular ingredient used by many hair care manufacturers including Aveda.
Great As Gel For Finger Waves
Flaxseed gel was one of the recipes I found in an old fashioned hair and beauty book from the 1920s. It seems that the homemade gel was used to hold old fashioned finger waves may years ago.
Having struggled learning to make finger waves in cosmetology school I can see where this DIY gel could be a godsend.
Flaxseed Gel Defrisant Options
Besides using the Flaxseed Gel to help anchor pin curls and create traditional finger waves, this all natural product can be used by people with natural curls and waves as a leave-in conditioner and defrisant.
It can be applied to newly cleansed damp hair and allowed to air dry. Gel will not flake or make hair hard or crunchy. If it does make your hair too stiff, experiment by adding less flax to the water or skipping the aloe vera option.
Flaxseed Gel May Not Work For All Hair Types & Textures
This homemade formula may not work for all hair types (very fine/thin, fine, medium, thick, very thick), texture (straight, wavy, curly, kinky) or length (short, medium, long, very long).
While the majority of people who love this product have naturally wavy, curly or frizzy tresses, it can be used to scrunch in some waves to naturally straight hair. In fact, I have used it to help me scrunch bigger waves into my own naturally wavy/curly strands.
I tell anyone who wants to try this product to start with a small batch and just experiment. You may decide you love it or you may hate it.
If you don't normally use hair gel or thickeners you probably won't appreciate this recipe.
Flaxseed Gel Defrisant Recipe
My philosophy is if you're going to go to all the trouble to make all natural products use the best ingredients possible. That means filtered or Spring water, organic ingredients and cooking over the stove rather than with a microwave.
For this recipe I get best results with pre-ground seeds. Others may prefer the ungrounded variety.
Step By Step Instructions
1. Boil one cup of spring or filtered water on the stove. It's best not to microwave the water whenever possible.
2. Depending on the length, thickness and style you which to create add one to two tablespoons of pre-ground flax seeds into the boiling water.
Note: You can buy pre-ground flax seeds at many health food stores. Small grinders can also be used to easily grind the seeds.
3. After pouring the flax seeds into the boiling water turn down the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
4. Allow the water to cool. Strain the seeds through a kitchen strainer keeping the liquid and disposing of all of the seeds. This is important. You don't want to use this homemade hair defrisant with the seeds. Unless of course you wish to have visible seeds in your hair.
5. After the seeds are removed and the mixture has cooled you may optionally add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel directly from the plant or from a health food store.
Mix the aloe into the flax seed water stirring well. The aloe gel will keep hair soft and works as a great foundation for the flax water.
6. You may also optionally add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to add a nice aroma to the mix. Keep in mind if you do use essential oils this may shorten the life of the gel.
Some people enjoy the aroma of flax and others prefer to add a few drops of aromatic oils. You may also want to add rosemary, which is a great essential oil for healthy hair.
Store in the refrigerator to set. This recipe will usually remain viable in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Additional Notes
Flaxseeds are very rich in Omega-3 oils, which are the essential fatty acids considered to be very important for overall health. Flaxseeds are also important for adding health and beauty to hair and skin.
If you prefer to try flax seeds in oil form you can buy this at many health food stores. You may try the oil directly on dry crunchy ends. Please follow us on Twitter at: https://Twitter.com/HairBoutique. I look forward to meeting new people from all walks of Twitter and learning from their Tweets.
