One of the astrology questions I'm asked about hair and the moon is cutting hair by a Leo Moon.
When it comes to hair related electional or event planning the moon is a key component.
The bigger question is which moon works best in a particular planned electional or event situation. Is there a best moon or not for the different phases of the moon?
While there are a set of suggested electional and event planning rules provided by some of the greatest astrologers of all time - including the famous Mrs. Ivy Jacobson and her student Gilbert Navarro (my teacher) - not every moon rule works for every person or every chart.
More importantly, not every astrologer agrees with every other astrologer.
Case in point? The late astrologer Edith Custer published a monthly astrology focused magazine appropriately titled The Mercury Hour.
Many of the late great astrologers around the world subscribed to the magazine which consisted of their letters, notes, short poems, writings and musings to each other (pre-Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or other similar Social Media channels) regarding a myriad of astrological happenings in the world.
Ironically the Mercury Hour was well-known for being chock full of hotly contested disagreements between some of the world's most esteemed astrologers who often agreed to disagree on some of astrology's basic principles.
The truth of the matter? When it comes to utilizing astrology for harnessing the power of the moon for hair care, one size does not fit all.
I know even though I've been studying astrology since I was 16 years old, I still uncover new information on a regular basis, even after following set rules.
Although most astrologers agree you should cut your hair on a New Moon for fastest growth and the Full Moon for thicker growth, not all astrologers agree on the very best moon.
Famed astrologer Johanna Paungger believes utilizing a Leo Moon is best.
In the book Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe suggest on page 120 "go (ing) to the hairdressers a number of times when the Moon is in Leo and observe what happens. This is of special interest to men".
Also, Paungger and Poppe, when discussing various preparations for the growing a good head of hair suggest "massage (ing) the scalp and roots of the hair for optimal results during the best moons for hair which they state is "Aries, Leo or Virgo."
Not all astrologers might agree, but Paungger and Poppe promote Leo Moon for fabulous hair throughout all of their books and from their personal research.
In The Power Of Timing, lunar experts, Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe really amp up their suggestions to use the Moon in Leo for all hair related activities.
Paungger notes "in my home in Tyrol there used to be very few men with bald heads. Perhaps the reason for that was from a baby's very first haircut people always looked out for a Leo (Moon) Day."
Although some astrologers may not agree with utilizing a Leo moon for hair care, many astrologers believe the Moon in Leo rules the lion with it's magnificent mane.
The famed astrologer, Paungger, states "the correct moments for cutting hair are Leo days and Virgo days. Regardless whether the moon is waning (Full to New) or waxing (New to Full)."She also advised hair be cut during the Moon in Virgo because it "retains its form and beauty longer." She recommended this, regardless of the moon's phase.
Paungger states "if (a) Leo (Moon) fell on a Sunday, many people would seek him (the barber) out after church and entrust their hair to him."
She goes on to say "have your hair cut or trimmed every month from February to August on Leo moon days. During that period Leo (moon) always occurs in the waxing moon (growing in light) which further reinforces the good effect."
Paungger notes "the Leo quality has a special effect on male hormones.
Perhaps that is the explanation for "hairy" effect of Leo days i.e. for the fact that hair becomes stronger."
It also provides Moon Tables which include the day, date, the sign the Moon is in, the element of the sign, the nature of the sign, the Moon's phase (First, Second, Third, Fourth, New Moon or Full Moon) and the time that the moon changes or phase.
Llewellyn's annual Moon Sign Book also includes an aspectarian with the aspects (or angles) of the Moon to the other planets. Llewellyn's Moon Tables provide the favorable and unfavorable aspects so that you can avoid selecting dates for activities when the Moon is in an unfavorable aspect.
To make hair grow thicker, Llewellyn recommends cutting hair up to and at the Full Moon, but not after. Llewellyn recommends cutting hair right before or at the Full Moon specifically in the signs of Taurus, Cancer or Leo.
They also recommend that the aspect be a Sun opposite Moon.
Many other astrologers have come out with similar theories of using Leo and Virgo moons although they may tie the moons to New or Full phases.
If you're looking for proof whether a method is effect or not, the ultimate answer is to do your own research.
One of the best lessons I've learned in all the years I've been studying astrology is that ultimately I have do to my own research. While I always study the ancient rules of the Moon, listen to multiple opinions, ultimately I do my own research and trust my instincts.
Everyone should do this as well. I always am willing to agree to disagree with anyone about the Moon and the best time to cut hair for desired results, whether it to speed or slow growth, get a chemical treatment, reverse loss or add thickness.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but at the end of the day, follow your own course of action, take notes and make your own decisions.
Is it good or bad to utilize a Leo and/or Virgo moon for hair care advantages?
