Introduction - Hair Moon Phases 2013

Sometime near the end of December every year you can find me locked up in my office with my Rosicrucian Ephemerides charting the key Moon phases for the upcoming year.

I've been studying the Moon's movement since I was 15 years old.  I've concluded performing certain activities based on the various phases of the Moon works for me.  Does it work for everyone?  Probably not.

Taking action based on the phases of the Moon dates back to ancient times.  In current times some farmers still plant and harvest by the phases of the moon.

Hair Actions Based On Moon Phases

The same principles can be applied to taking various hair actions such as cutting hair during the New Moon phase to encourage faster growth or right at the Full Moon to encourage fuller growth.

Cutting hair during the period after the Full Moon and before New Moo nmay retard hair growth.   Some people who have hair which grows too fast might actually wish to slow down their growth cycle to save on visits to the barber or hairstylist.

There are a wide range of hair actions which may be taken according to the phases of the moon.

Charting The Phases Of Moon By Time Zone

Some astrologers plan simply around whether the Moon is New or Full. I also look at other phases of the Moon and chart the exact beginning and ending of the Moon's movement according to Central Standard Time (CST) or Daylight Savings Time, when appropriate.

Different Moon Phases

The Moon takes two-and-a-half days to move through each of the twelve zodiac signs, covering the entire zodiac in 28 days. Within this 28-day cycle, the Moon moves through eight different phases, from new to full returning back to new again.

Of these eight different moon phases, four are considered major and four are considered minor.  The four major moon phases include:

1. New Moon

2. First Quarter

3. Full Moon

4. Third Quarter

The Moon changes shape which gaining or losing light throughout her entire cycle.  By following the different Moon cycles you can use the Moon to help successfully time the events in your life.   These events can range from growing your hair to a myriad of activities from losing weight to having your hair colored to growing out your nails.

New Moon

At the new Moon, the cycle begins and seeds are planted. It’s the best time all month to start any type of new activities, plans, routines or projects.  Anything started under the New Moon grows quickly.

First Quarter Moon

At the First Quarter, the Moon is approximately half full, but still growing in light.  The First Quarter is an excellent time to address any new challenges or reset your original course to stay on track towards achieving your goals. Energy and motivation tend to be high during the First Quarter which helps with overcoming any obstacles which need to be overcome.

Full Moon

At the full Moon, the Moon has reached her peak.  She shines brightly over dark nights. Insight and emotions peak during the Full Moon.  People are more emotional and in touch with their feelings at this time.  The full Moon brings a chance to gain illumination or get clarity about current life issues.  This is a time of using insight to help you succeed.

Third Quarter Moon

At the Third Quarter, the Moon is now only half full and slowly losing her light.   It’s the best time to finish up projects, finalize existing contracts and begin to think about a rest and a mini break. Tensions may run higher as a sense of urgency underpins life at these times.

The signs and elements of each new and full Moon also influences the kinds of things which are best achieved or avoided.  Listed below are the four elements (fire, earth, air and water) along with the related astrological signs.

Fire Signs –- Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Fire energy is assertive, aggressive, expressive, wired and sometimes in your face.  When the Moon is in a Fire Sign the energy of the fire demands action and movement.  When the New Moon is in a Fire Sign it is a great time to begin a new task which has been put on the back burner due to procrastination.  Fire energy wants to get things done, live large and win lots of attention.  It's also a great time to begin activities which require people to be expressive, social or outgoing.  On the opposite spectrum, anger and inappropriate fighting may occur.

Earth Signs –- Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Unlike Fire Energy, when the Moon is in an Earth Sign the energy focus shifts towards practicality, reliability, focus and commitment.  Earth Energy is practical, diplomatic, grounded and steady.  Earth Energy demands focus upon matters of physical health, money and having great daily routines.  It is also tied to making plans, keeping agreements and holding things together.  It is a great time for hair, beauty, and body pampering.

Air Signs –- Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Air Energy is tied to all forms of mental and verbal activities.  Communication ranging from text messaging and email to phone calls and traditional snail mail.  When the moon is is in an Air Energy sign it's a great time for processing any and all types of information and dealing with tasks which required a heightened level of mentality.  Handling questions, queries or discussing deals are well suited to this enery.

Water signs –- Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water Energy is about emotion, loved ones, family, introspection, changing moods, intuition and establishing a sense of safety.  Feelings may be hard to hide during a strong Water Energy period especially since the Moon's tides are directly tied to Water Energy and the Moon rules the sign of Cancer which is a key Water Energy sign.
