Kate Walsh's Messy Hair

Kathleen Erin "Kate" Walsh (born October 13, 1967) made her acting bones as the controversial, beautifully coiffed, Dr. Addison Montgomery on ABC's Grey's Anatomy and eventually Private Practice.

Kate Walsh's messy hair was part of her recent break with her former Grey's Anatomy related role.

As wild Judge Rebecca Wright, the actress wore a series of bed head inspired ponytails, long tousled waves and hair knots.

Her role of Judge Wright on NBC's Bad Judge sitcom was extremely short lived.  Some critics dubbed it the worst new TV show of the 2014 Fall Season.

Not only did Kate switch from drama to comedy, she switched from ABC to NBC.

With all those major changes, her hair transition from her polished surgeon's rich auburn style to a hard-partying judge's messy light amber strands wasn't all that surprising.

Kate's trademark red hair was lightened and brightened for her Judge Wright role.

How To Create Kate Walsh's Long Messy Tresses

Listed below are the steps for recreating Kate Walsh's center-parted long messy tresses.

1.  Wet cleanse detangled pre-conditioned hair with cool water.

Note:  Red hair fades quickly and should never be wet washed in hot water.

Lukewarm is better than hot, but can still accelerate red hue fading.

2.  Utilize a color protective shampoo which has been diluted with water to minimize harsh cleansing.

If you prefer wet wash only with a color extending conditioner or water only.

3.  Rinse shampoo from hair and apply a color protective rinse-out conditioner.

While still in the shower, detangle hair working from side to side in 1" sections.

Use fingers of a wide tooth comb to distribute conditioner from roots to ends.

4.  Rinse conditioner from hair with cool water.

5. Apply a hydrating leave-in conditioner layered with mousse to the palms of your hands. Massage together. Apply liberally to hair from right below roots to the ends. Comb through to distribute.

6. For added volume apply a volumizing spray to roots. Add 1 drop of blow dry lotion to palms of the hands and lightly rake over the top of damp strands.

7. Use a large round boar bristle brush combined with a blow dryer with a concentrator attachment to direct air flow.

8. Dry hair in 2" sections working around the head until all of the hair is completely dry.

9. Section hair into 2" sections and curl with a 2" curling iron.

Curl each section alternating from left to right.

Note: When each section is curled, remove from the iron, re-roll around the fingers into a faux curler and pin to the scalp to set and cool.

1o. Once all of the hair has been curled, pinned, set and cooled, remove the individual curls.

Note: The larger the curls, the looser the resulting texture.

11. Apply a strong hold hairspray all over and gently run fingers through the hair to deconstruct curls and create a tousled texture.

Summary - Kate Walsh's Messy Hair

Kate Walsh adopted a series of messy hairstyles for her hard partying rold as the wild Judge Rebecca Wright on NBC's 2014 Bad Judge series.

Although the series was quickly cancelled due to poor ratings, Kate's tousled, messy hairstyles are noteworthy for their casual simplicity.
