Short Hair: Keira Knightley Domino Hair Effect

Introduction

Keira Knightley The Jacket Premiere

Celebrities, stars, actors and actresses are often required to drastically alter their appearance for a film or TV role. Sometimes the drastic strand changes involve going with short hair styles.

Such was the case with actress Keira Christina Knightley (3/26/85) who chopped off her lush shoulder-length tresses to play Domino Harvey. The title of the film was Domino and told the story of former socialite and model, Domino Harvey who walked on the wild side and became a bounty hunter.

Domino was the daughter of movie star Laurence Harvey but she turned her back on the privileged lifestyle she was born into and decided to chase down criminals for money.

Domino Harvey was known to be very "ballsy" and someone who worked and lived on the very dark side.

Kiera told the press she cut her hair to get into character for the role which she found very challenging.

As far as her new short hair? The actress who previously was known for wearing her hair long and lush said "I love it, it's very liberating to have it all chopped off".

Unfortunately the film which was highly anticipated and starred Jacqueline Bisset, Lucy Liu, Macy Gray, Mickey Rourke, Christopher Walken and Mena Suvari was panned by critics. It did not do well at the box office which was a shame since it was hoped to be a breakout role for Keira who is best known for her Pirates of the Caribbean roles.

Keira Knightley The Jacket

Many celebrities like Keira Knightley who are constantly changing their strands, will opt for wigs and half-wigs to do an instant hair alteration.

When it comes to films and taking on new roles, actresses are used to being required to alter their natural hair length, style and color for the character they are playing.

Keira is no stranger to hair extensions although she appeared to let her hair grow out on its own as demonstrated by her appearance at the 78th Academy Awards lunch in early 2006, approximately one year after her short haircut made its dramatic debut.

Based on the length of her hair one year later, it is most likely that Keira was wearing her own carefully grown out tresses.

Keira's short haircut could best be described as a cross between a graduated bob and a long cap. It was definitely very flattering for the young beauty.

Keira has an oval face shape although depending on how thin her face it, her chin may be more prominent at times.

The front of her hair was long and draped from mid crown down and over one eye. Her cut had great face framing angles, especially around the sides which was a great silhouettes. Her hair was cut much shorter at the nape of the neck.

Step 1: Shampoo and condition your hair with your normal products designed for your current hair type, texture and condition.

If your hair is highlighted like Keira's (if you look closely you will see Keira's subtle highlights and lowlights. use either a moisture enhanced or color enriched formula. If your hair is dry from chemical processing, consider diluting the shampoo formula to protect your strands. Shampoo products to try: Phyto - Phytojoba Hydrating Shampoo, PHYTO - Dry Hair System, Phyto - PhytoBrush Shampoo.

If you have baby fine or thin hair and wish to build in the same lush movement and volume that Keira has, use a volume enhancing shampoo.

Skip any rinse-out conditioning products that might make hair too soft and flat. If you must use a rinse-out conditioner, make sure that you limit how much you use and that you concentrate on the middle to the ends. Rinse well with a cool water spray which helps build natural volume and increases shine.

Step 2: Towel blot strands. Do not rub wet hair which is more fragile and can break. Detangle strands from the ends to the roots.

Step 3: Apply your favorite straightening and/or defrizzing balm. Distribute from the top of the ears to the ends. Distribute well. If you prefer, mix with a good leave-in conditioner for super shine and softness.

If your hair is fine or thin, apply a volumizing gel or similar products to the roots to get lots of body and movement. To protect against heat and add body, distribute a leave-in conditioner, mousse or gel from the top of the ears to the ends. Distribute well.

If your hair tends to frizz or is naturally wavy or curly, you may wish to combine a volume product for the roots with a smoothing serum for the rest of the hair. Root volume products to try: Phyto - Phytovolume Actif, PHYTO - Volume System, Phyto - Phytovolume Shampoo).

Step 4: Working from side to side use a boar's head or natural round brush combined with your blow dryer to straighten and build in body.

Step 5: To build in volume at the roots, use a small round brush to lift your tresses up and direct the air flow from the dryer up the hair shaft to the root. This "ruffles the cuticle" helping to add natural fullness.

Step 6: Seal the style by finishing up with a blast of cool air, if possible, from your blow dryer.

Step 7: Carefully comb in your desired part. To create perfect sleekness, go over the hair with a straightening iron.

Step 8: Spray the finished style with a good holding hairspray. Hairsprays to try: PhytoPro - Instant Hold Spray #15).

Step 9: Apply a tiny drop of shine serum, drops or spray into the palms of your hands. Lightly brush the palms over the top of your style and you are ready to rock. Shine product to try: Phyto - PhytoLisse (Formerly Phytodefrisant RelaxSerum)

Summary

Going short, regardless of the reason, never looked so good as it did on Keira Knightley. Her graduated short haircut looked spectacular on her and it honored her role for her movie character. You may not need to cut your hair for your job but if you do, try this spectacular look.
