Even though research shows that a variety of treatments for baldness often fails, this research has not stalled the parade of celebrities like Wayne Rooney and actor James Nesbitt, from getting hair replacement surgery.
For many dealing with hair loss, hair replacement surgery is considered a drastic last resort. Besides being a long (up to 8 hours) painful and expensive process ($50,000-75,000), it does not come with a money back guarantee.
In fact, studies have shown that up to 50% of all hair replacement surgeries fail. In hair replacement surgery follicles are removed from an area of dense hair on the head and transplanted to the bald patch.
For those not wanting the expense and risks of hair replacement surgery there are hair-replacement systems. These systems have come a long way since the introduction of the toupee.
Famous British DJ and TV presenter Jason King recently revealed to the media that he had acquired the very latest in hair-replacement options. In other words, the 36 year old King is now the proud owner of a brand new toupee which looks as if he has a full head of healthy hair.
In fact, King’s new toupee looks so realistic, it’s hard to tell it’s not his own strands. That’s because the current hair-replacement options are identically matched to the wearer’s own hair. Then the replacement hair is woven or integrated into a fine lace base and then bonded directly to the scalp with surgical glue. After the hair-replacement is secured to the scalp, it is cut and styled by a trained hair replacement professional so that the toupee blends in with the remaining hair.
King has confessed to the media that his hair starting falling out when he was 25 years old in spite of leaving a healthy lifestyle free of smoking and excessive drinking.
Whereas men used to be very concerned with keeping their hair-replacement systems top secret, King is just one of several celebrities who openly discuss their toupees. Hair-replacement has come out of the closet. King has confessed that image is very important for celebrities and he often worried about his expanding bald patch which would appear very obvious during certain camera angles.
He told the media ‘I feel that in kids’ telly, it’s better to have quite cool hair, styled in a youthful way, not something resembling an egg hatching from a nest on the back of your head like mine was.’
Now that hair-replacement has literally become a known option exercised by celebrities, the option has become very popular with non-celebrities as well. The Hair Replacement Clinic in Pudsey which is located on the outskirts of Leeds, England has reported a 150 per cent increase in clients this year alone.
Why? Many men can’t afford the high cost of hair replacement surgery but can afford the much lower cost or hair-replacement systems which can range in cost from $2,500 – $5,000+ depending on a variety of factors. Also, hair replacement surgery has a high failure rate of more than 50 percent.
Of course hair-replacement systems have challenges. Daily wear and tear due to sleeping, styling and washing will eventually cause a replacement system to wear out. Depending on a variety of factors a hair-replacement system will wear out after 12 to 18 months. Once a hair replacement system wears out, it has to be completely replaced.
Another challenge occurs when the hair recedes rapidly which means that the initial system will no longer cover the bald spots. This will also require a new system be custom developed and created for the changing hair loss coverage needs.
