Nicki Minaj recently made news for firing her longtime hairstylist.

A Minaj source told the media “She’s fired her long-standing hairdresser who has been responsible for some of her crazy hairstyles over the years. She’s also fired her stylist. Nicki feels that now she’s done with 'American Idol' she can finally be taken seriously and release a proper hip-hop album.”

While it's not that uncommon for both celebrities and non-celebs to fire their hairstylists, the street goes both ways. Hairstylists also fire their clients for a wide range of reasons.

Yes, even celebrity hairstylists  fire their famous clients, although when the stylist does the firing it usually doesn't make headlines.

Why?  Celebrity hairstylists are very protective of their big name clients, even if they fire them. Did I mention celebrity hair pros are also very loyal of their famous heads?

Whether your have a big name hairstylist or not, a hair professional may fire you for one or more of the following reasons:

1.  A salon client requests one or more treatments (chemical color, relaxing, straightener) which have a very high risk of causing damage to the hair.

2.  Clients damage their own hair with Do-It-Yourself (DIY) treatments and expect their stylist to work miracles to fix it.

3.  The client has unrealistic expectations of the hair look they wish to acquire when it's truly not possible.

4.  Clients are chronically late causing the stylist to fall behind schedule with other clients.

5.  Appointments are cancelled at the last minute on a regular basis or the client insist on being scheduled in during peak rush times.

6.  Clients display consistently rude behaviors such as making and/or receiving ongoing phone calls, behaving in a loud or obnoxious manner or arguing with salon staff.

7.  A client writes a bad check or deliberately avoids paying for services rendered.

8.  Clients insist on undoing all the hard work their stylists do on their hair by using hot water, cheap products and mistreating their tresses in a myriad of ways.

Most professional hairstylists will go out of their way to be polite, tactful, discreet and soft spoken when firing a client or declining their request for impossible hair services.

The stylist will usually tell the client the health and integrity of their hair is of primary importance above all else. They'll most likely explain the treatment the client is requesting would most likely have  undesirable results.

They'll decline to provide the requested service and may even suggest the client investigate other options.  Some stylists will offer alternatives, but not always.

In some cases the hairstylist will let the client know they can no longer schedule them for future services.  In that case the stylist is in essence firing their client.

Summary

Hair clients, famous or otherwise, may fire their hair stylists.  The street goes both ways.  Hairstylists also fire their clients for a myriad of reasons listed in this blog.

Daily Hair Tip
Split ends are a separation of the hair shaft that exposes hair's fragile inner layers. The only real cure for split ends is to have them trimmed.
