Corinne Bailey Rae Natural Hair Style Secrets

Corinne Bailey Rae (Corinne Jacqueline Bailey born 26 February 1979) is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist from Leeds, who released her debut album Corinne Bailey Rae in February 2006.

Bailey Rae was named the number-one predicted breakthrough act of 2006 in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2006.  She became the fourth female British act in history to have her first album debut at number one.

Bailey Rae is the Special Ambassador for the charity CORD as well as the central ambassador for International water and Sanitation charity, Pump Aid.

Besides her work with CORD and Pump Aid she is an ambassador for natural hair styles.  She is famous for her natural coils and curls which she has worn from short in 2006 to shoulder hugging (2011).

Utilizing A Curl-Loving Cut With Braid Setting Technique

When in the United States Baily Rae turns her natural hair over to colorist/hair stylist Donna Tripodi.  Tripodi hails from NYC's Eva Scrivo Salon.  Tripodi provided a few soundbites on Baily Rae's hair for the July 2011 issue of Self Magazine.

Tripodi reported that Bailey Rae keep her natural curls, coils and kinks cool with "a curl-loving cut" and customized styling tips.  The beautiful Brit sleep in four to seven tight braids which Tripodi says is "the best way to calm coarse coils after shampooing and conditioning."

Why?  Tripodi explained that "the tension from the braids will straighten the hair so it lies slightly flatter" to the head while the braids relax extra tight coils.

The best way to utilize braiding for natural hair texture is to unwind them in the morning upon waking.  If the curl profile is not balanced you have the option to touch up some of the too flat pieces with a curling iron. Always finish with a hydrating oil to keep curls soft and moist.

Second, Third & Fourth Day Curls

Tripodi said "Once Corinne's hair is washed and dried, it actually gets better as the week goes one, because she adds a light layer of hydrating oil every day, which helps to preserve the curls without adding any poufiness."

The New York hairstylist noted that this trick works best on very dry or very coarse hair.

Tripodi suggests a good brushing of strands from roots to ends with a 100% boar bristle brush before cleansing hair.

She believes that a good brushing "will pull the scalp's natural oils to the parched bottom half of the strands - it's as if you're giving your dry ends a hydrating facial without using any products."

Hair Color Help

Although her raven black strands are all natural, the shine is amped up with a clear, semi-permanent glaze every six to eight weeks.  The clear glaze naturally flattens the hair's cuticle to minimize frizz while turning up the shine factor.   Tripodi warns that clear glaze application can be tricky because if it's left on too long it can lift color creating red undertones in virgin and colored hair.

A Little Frizz Is The Secret

The stylist shared a special secret.  She said "Rae likes her hair (style) to look imperfect and natural but a tiny bit of frizz has become her signature look.

The point to Rae loving her frizz?  Don't take your natural hairstyling too seriously.

Obviously Bailey Rae is comfortable with her natural hair styles.  She was spotted in September 2011 in New York with her natural curls in stunning long tubes of shiny coils.  She looked spectacular.
