My lifelong journey into the world of amazing magical hair oil recipes dates back to the late 1980s when my late husband, Michael Thayer, took me to Blackwell's Books in Oxford England.
During our Oxford trip I spent many days pouring over hundreds of books filled with amazing information about herbs, essential and carrier oils and alternative healing formulations.
Michael was a Ninja Virgo (both Sun and rising signs) with an insatiable quest for knowledge.
After graduating with a degree in Math from Harvard, he spent several years in Europe where he discovered a wide range of alternative healing techniques.
Eventually his love for learning and healing guided him to St. Louis, Missouri where he graduated from Logan School of Chiropractic.
With our best friend Joseph Unger, D.C., the three of us founded the very first alternative healing clinic - Atrium Health Services - in St. Louis, Missouri.
Although our house in St. Louis was filled with glass jars of dried herbs, along with hundreds of tiny amber and cobalt blue bottles (filled with essential oils (E.O) ), I didn't really understand the true power of oils until my trip to England.
Since that life changing visit to Blackwell's, I've devoted many hours to mixing and testing a dizzying array of essential oil formulas on my hair, scalp, skin and body.
I've experimented on myself with herbs, homeopathic remedies, flower essences along with crystal and Reiki infused sprays.
A variety of amazing magical hair oils I've whipped up in my kitchen have helped me with a wide range of scalp, hair, skin and body challenges.
Although not everyone will benefit from utilizing essential oils, many people will experience positive, if not magical, results.
Juniper oil is derived from blue berries which turn black at maturity. A little known fact about Juniper berries is that they are sometimes added to gin for flavoring.
Note: Never use Juniper or any other essential oil without first mixing with a carrier oil or water. If you have kidney problems or are pregnant, this oil may be too stimulating and could pose a risk.
Always consult your doctor before trying the hair and scalp oil formulas. Do NOT take this or any other essential oil internally without express recommendations from your health care professional.
While not everyone will agree, I love Juniper oil's spicy pine infused aroma which helps to calm stress and anxiety.
Juniper oil is known for helping to stimulate healing circulation and encouraging relaxation which helps minimize hair loss.
It's also a go-to EO oil for fighting skin and/or scalp breakouts while adding soothing moisture.
Juniper oil can be used to encourage hair growth, minimize scalp breakouts and/or dandruff while adding hydration and healing to stressed strands.
Feel free to try the Juniper hair oil recipes below and/or modify with your own favorite essential oils.
Combine 10 drops of Juniper Oil (original not synthetic oil) with 1 ounce of Jojoba oil or similar light carrier oil such as almond.
Note: Always do a patch test first to determine your reaction to the formula. Apply to a small area of scalp to test results. If you find the formula helpful, feel free to use freely. When, for any reason the oil burns, wash it off immediately with cool clear water.
Pour the oil into the palms of your hands to warm. Massage onto the pads of your fingertips from your palms. Apply to scalp while gently massaging.
Avoid using fingernails when massaging the Juniper oil into your scalp. Fingernails can leave tiny damaging scratches on the scalp.
Wrap scalp and hair in warm towel or plastic.
Leave on the scalp for up to 15 minutes.
Wet cleanse with shampoo or similar formula.
Finish with a cool and/or cold rinse.
Air dry for best results.
Combine 6 drops of Juniper Oil (original not synthetic oil) with 1/2 ounce of Jojoba oil.
Pour oil into the palms of your hands and allow oil to warm slightly. Massage palms and fingers with oil.
Note: Always do a patch test first to determine your reaction to the formula. Apply to a small area of scalp and skin to test results. If you find the formula helpful, feel free to use freely.
If for any reason the oil burns, wash it off immediately with cool clear water.Use juniper oil coated fingertips (avoid fingernail contact with the scalp) to lightly massage the scalp before raking fingers throughout the length of dry hair.
Wrap hair in a warm towel or plastic wrap for up to one hour.
Rinse oil completely from hair with lukewarm water.
Since Juniper oil leaves hair hydrated and conditioned, you may wish to avoid adding any type of shampoo.
If you are worried about oil on your strands you may optionally use a small amount of shampoo to remove formula.
Air dry when possible for extra benefits.
If you blow dry, use a slow, cool setting for best results.
Since Juniper oil leaves hair hydrated and conditioned, you may wish to apply the Juniper Conditioning Hair Oil Recipe (see above) after a wet cleansing treatment, but before your final cool/cold clear water rinse.
Cleanse hair in lukewarm water with your regular shampoo or wet cleanse formula. Rinse well.
Accordion squeeze excess water from strands.
Apply Juniper formula to palms and fingers. Rake through hair from roots to ends, focusing on damaged or dry areas.
Allow formula to remain on strands for 3-5 minutes.

Finish with a cool/cold water final rinse.
Air dry when possible for extra benefits.
Juniper oil makes a great oily skin toning treatment. It can also be used for oily scalps.

Spritz clean cotton balls with the formula and apply to oily areas of the skin and scalp.
Note: Always do a patch test first to determine your reaction to the formula. Apply to a small area of scalp and skin to test results. If you find the formula helpful, feel free to use freely.
Rinse with cool water and air or gently pat dry.
Besides minimizing facial and scalp oil, the Juniper formula will help protect against infection and inflammation.
Juniper essential oil has been used for a variety of healing purposes for centuries.
Besides the benefits it provides to hair, scalp and skin, it has been utilized for a variety of other conditions including, but not limited to easing joint pain, to assist with lifting spirits, balancing the emotions and clearing the mind.
Although Juniper is safe in small amounts when combined with gin, it should never be taken internally or without firm diluting into a carrier oil, water or other carrier liquids such as Witch Hazel or similar.
Experiment with Juniper and make your own formulas. While not everyone will enjoy the woodsy aroma or see the direct hair, scalp and skin benefits, it can be a delightful essential oil for many.
