The late great celebrity hairstylist Robert "Rawbert" Hallowell was a genius at whipping up great homemade skin care remedies right in his Los Angele kitchen.
Many times I had the great privilege of watching this special soul whip up an array of spectacular hair, skin and beauty treatments.
Although he was famous as a celebrity hair care guru, he was also an amazing skin care expert.
Robert had an amazing knowledge of herbs and essential oils as well as how to combine them to generate amazing results.
Listed below are some of my favorite homemade skin care remedies I received from Robert during the years I knew him.
Robert's DIY mask utilizes pumpkin seeds which are a fabulous source of protein, magnesium, copper and zinc.
It also utilizes egg yolks which are famous for firming up the skin.
Ingredients
1 egg yolk1/2 cup of fresh pumpkin seeds from a small pumpkin
1/2 teaspoon cornstarch (fine)Directions
Scoop out the pumpkin seeds from the pumpkin. In a mini food processor, blend the egg yolk with 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds (unwashed).Blend until all seeds are completely emulsified, then add the corn starch and mix everything together with a spoon.
Apply to freshly cleansed skin and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water, following with your usual toner and light moisturizer.
The pumpkin will help clear up any skin disorders from eczema to acne.
It will also work with the egg yolk to help strengthen your skin's elasticity. And the cornstarch acts as a light exfoliant. Put them all together and they make a marvelous multi-purpose treatment.
The combination of hazelnuts with honey and sour cream make a great cleansing scrub.
Honey is antibacterial, expectorant and has known healing properties for the skin.
Ingredients
1 tablespoon finely ground hazelnuts (Use a mini food processor works well for this)1 teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon sour creamDirections
Combine the above ingredients in a glass bowl. Splash your face several times with warm water, then massage the scrub lightly into the skin. Rinse with cool water and pat dry.For a more complete facial follow with the Hydrating Facial Steam.
Steaming the face is an excellent way of deep cleansing the skin. The steam opens the pores in the skin allowing the parsley to be most effective.
Parsley makes a fabulous skin toner.
It's also is known to be especially effective at removing blackheads from the skin.
Ingredients
1 cup fresh parsleyBoiling water
Directions
In a glass bowl, pour 3 cups boiling water over the parsley. Allow to steep while cleansing the skin.Cover your entire head (except your face) with a towel, keeping your face at least 12 inches from the water and draping the towel around the bowl to hold the steam in.
Keep your eyes closed and steam for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse your face with cool water, then pat dry.
The steam will loosen oil deposits while lightly moisturizing the skin.
Robert recommended using the apple toner followed by walnut oil night hydrating cream.
Ingredients
1 large red apple, peeled, chopped, and cored1/2 cup distilled water
Directions
Place the apple in a stainless steel saucepan, add water and bring to a boil. Set aside and allow to cool.Strain out the apple pulp, reserving the liquid in a glass container.
You can keep the liquid in the refrigerator for a cool splash after daily face cleansing or an at-home facial.
Walnuts are a great source of super hydrating Omega-3 essential fatty acid and linolenic acid. It's also detoxifying and will heal a wide range of skin problems.
Ingredients
3 tablespoons distilled water1/3 cup walnut oil ( found at your local health food store or grocer)
1/4 cup coconut oil3 tablespoons finely grated beeswax (use a beeswax candle, making sure it is 100 percent beeswax )
Directions
Combine the above ingredients in a glass double boiler. Heat until the mixture is completely emulsified, then transfer to a clean glass container with a lid.
Continue stirring until the liquid has cooled. Apply to freshly cleansed skin.
Take a small amount, emulsify between palms and fingertips before applying.
This should be kept refrigerated with the lid tightly closed. It can be used as an eye cream.
During the more than 10 years Robert and I collaborated on a wide range of hair and beauty projects, he never ceased to amaze me with his vast knowledge of natural beauty ingredients.
I used to call him and leave a random ingredient on his voice mail.
He'd always call me back with an impromptu recipe.
It didn't matter whether I mentioned essential oils, an array of herbs or a list of beauty foods. Although I tried to stump him, he never let me down.

Carla has also authored some fabulous e-books. Check out her Amazon's author pageThis past summer, I called and left just one word on his voice mail. It was "pomegranate".
You guessed it, he whipped up an amazing beauty recipe just for me. I will always cherish it as one of the last gifts he bestowed upon lucky little me.
